NHL talking about taking down netting in each end of rink

    NHL NETWORK

The NHL is in serious talks about taking down the mesh netting that is at both ends of the rink for next season.

The protective netting was only put up only because a 13 year old girl Brittanie Cecil died when a deflected puck struck her in the forehead at a game between the Columbus Blue Jackets and Calgary Flames back in 2002 and the NHL wanted to avoid a lawsuit.

Now the netting might be coming down, league owners will have a vote on this sometime this summer in the NHL off-season meetings that will be held in the league offices in Toronto.

They don't need nets to prevent lawsuits. On the back of each ticket there are guidelines, and warnings stating that the ticket holder understand the risks of being in their seats and that object may be projected into the seating area.

If anything, they should make the boards higher all the way around if they can.

Bettman wants to speed up the games right? Make the boards higher and the probability of the puck leaving play is lower. Plus less ******* people will throw **** on the ice.

even with the disclaimers there are legal issues. The first death probably none but if another one then another one happens and you do nothing you could be negligent.

Drop the nets and lower the boards and sit in the "danger zone". Only stipulation is you have to be wasted and over 21.

I remember sitting right behind Barasso in the Gold seats of the Aud back in the mid 80s. Good times.

The arena here repeatedly announces to stay alert for pucks and other objects flying into the stands.

on older lady sued the City of Norfolk because her nose got broken from a T-SHirt shot out of the Cannon during intermission. and somehow she won.

A simple verbal warning is not enough to cover all their legal liability.

If they are warning about being aware of pucks during play shouldn't she feel safe during the intermission?

I disagree with taking the netting down.

... d-man puts his stick blade in front of a slapper, sending it up over the glass...

Pretty easy to do, and likely to happen often, when shot blocking is the name of the game these days. What do you gain by removing the netting? All the league would be doing is opening itself to another ugly incident.

Why would they take the netting down? It's not like anybody is complaining...but the next time someone gets hit with a puck and is seriously hurt or killed...a riot will ensue.

Maybe it's another brilliant idea from Gary Bettman?
