Could this be why Gailey picked Spiller ?

Gailey, has more of a thinking man's offense. There are frequent changes of personnel packages in the offense, which utilizes running backs as receivers, sometimes even winding up with an empty backfield behind the quarterback. It also features a running game that is geared more to the outside.

Spiller fits them all. Smart, can catch and is strong on the outside.

Found an old article on Gailey vs. Turner

I don't think empty backfield is a good idea with our OL.

Spiller is our Marshall Faulk. I wouldn't be suprised to see 35+ receptions from him this season.

I want to see 3 backs out in some formations

i want to see Spiller motioned out and jackson in the backfield

i want to see spiller at HB and lynch at FB

i want to see spiller at WR with Lynch and jackson in the backfield

i want mismatches it makes it hard for a team to know what the hell is going on cut the FB and just use lynch as a hybrid he can catch the ball.

also use nelson a lot more.

I would love a good mix of exotic 3 back, 1 TE, 1 WR sets - play to our strengths

Didn't Faulk have Orlando Pace blocking for him for much of his career?

Re: Could this be why Gailey picked Spiller ?

Its pretty simple why they picked him and its based around 5 reasons

                  24-25
                  3-6
                  15-18
                  13-19
                  10-17

Those represent the scores of 5 games we lost last year by a TD or less. Which means theoretically we were one play away from a W in each one of those games. You put a player on this roster that is a threat to score every time he touches the ball and some of those L's are going to turn into W's.

This offense needed a game changer as much as anything else

                    Why does that matter?
No back set means ball comes out of the QB'S hands quick...

and use alot of motion with backs and misdirection...create mismatches

atleast create a 10 play package and grow on it over the year

With our TEs and WRs, that better'd be the case.

We picked Spiller because Clausen sucks and there were no LTs worthy of a top 10 pick when we were in the chute. Besides, he was by FAR the best player available. 31 other teams would love to have that.

With Demetrius Bell at OT, the penalty flags will come out even quicker.
