<!-- {PHOTO ENDS} --> When the Buffalo Bills (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/teams/buf/;_ylt=As6sqylg7qzvGUL88KL6XI4Zc9AF) selected Clemson running back C.J. Spiller (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/players/23984/;_ylt=Atx.o7EBDJVM.q5rn1Pdi4cZc9AF)(notes) (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/players/23984/news;_ylt=ApSI2OcHtBurJMxlaVQOC.8Zc9AF) with the ninth overall pick in the 2010 NFL draft, fan reaction was decidedly mixed. On one hand, Spiller’s playmaking ability projected to help a desperately underachieving Bills offense. But the primary reason for that underachievement, the lack of a franchise quarterback, was not addressed until the seventh round of the draft (Levi Brown (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/players;_ylt=Al5FqbHSkBubLzipshs02WkZc9AF?type=lastname&first=1&query=Levi+Brown&q=Levi+Brown)). Not only did the Bills pass on potential pro signal-callers like Jimmy Clausen (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/players/24023/;_ylt=Al88FasECKYadH1Jpwpbid8Zc9AF)(notes) (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/players/24023/news;_ylt=AnJFX5asl.L1lXTqT76a3TkZc9AF), Colt McCoy (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/players/24060/;_ylt=AiurI7rLQEqbiSjNXdrWf5IZc9AF)(notes) (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/players/24060/news;_ylt=AuhQ2iBI20Zq.viF8ouSrZgZc9AF), and Tim Tebow (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/players/24000/;_ylt=ArebEGFW4zJKu3ixEKFJblsZc9AF)(notes) (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/players/24000/news;_ylt=As.2f2ZA3bQjmaMm_9cf27cZc9AF), they also eschewed the opportunities for veterans Donovan McNabb (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/players/4650/;_ylt=Av6OtM6xtgg224p3B6Ben4QZc9AF)(notes) (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/players/4650/news;_ylt=Ao87nt5saEGx3xuyUOJIwmMZc9AF) and Jason Campbell (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/players/7201/;_ylt=AurDxG47dI8gnUYGsGm91bAZc9AF)(notes) (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/players/7201/news;_ylt=AuunBBpKmQD7Pfzkkv30OcsZc9AF). Curious decisions, given the plug-in nature of those free-agent patch jobs to a passing game that scared nobody in 2009.
Last season, the Bills were “led” statistically by Ryan Fitzpatrick (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/players/7426/;_ylt=AjjlgPCSZPN9WQAeH0fkB3EZc9AF)(notes) (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/players/7426/news;_ylt=ArjFXE8gr.iU1rQMaDE_f4MZc9AF), a Harvard grad who has never thrown more touchdowns than interceptions in any one season in his four-year career. Trent Edwards (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/players/8346/;_ylt=AvxeU7d3HEbwAeDe5618xMkZc9AF)(notes) (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/players/8346/news;_ylt=AvailpTeEe_fdJ.CMB7FbUMZc9AF), king of the check downs, had just two of his 183 pass attempts travel more than 40 yards in the air last season. Brian Brohm (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/players/8833/;_ylt=AhBx5kkt1cPCzFGC8.SAFKQZc9AF)(notes) (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/players/8833/news;_ylt=Aqa2rg6Y3jNDikBymz.FM7IZc9AF), the former Louisville star signed from Green Bay’s practice squad, has as good a chance to grab the starting job as anyone, a fact that new head coach Chan Gailey recently confirmed.
