Safety Brett Johnson is an intriguing diamond-in-the-rough prospect among the Buffalo Bills' rookies.

Johnson, a University of California product, showed off big-time athletic skills at his pro- day workout before the NFL Draft.

He set a Cal record with a vertical jump of 42½ inches. Only three draft prospects at any position did better at the NFL Scouting Combine workouts. He had a broad jump of 10 feet, 9 inches. Only two players at the combine did better. He ran a 40-yard dash time that averaged out at 4.43 seconds. Only three safeties ran faster.

could be an undrafted FA score...

From what I understand in Draftboy's post about Johnson is the guy is a hard hitter and can move up to support the run.

Probably a special teams guy to start if he can make the cuts...

John Wendling had most of those traits.

So did Ronnie Lott

Except Lott was the #8 overall draft pick.

Remember Drew Haddad? Constantin Ritzmann? Jon Wendling? Steve Johnson? Xavier Omon?

Every year around this time, some UDFA or late-round draft pick surprises the coaches and gets a ton of media attention. On rare occasions (maybe once every two decades or so) it results in a Jason Peters. The overwhelming majority of the time, it results in a guy who either misses the team entirely, ends up on the practice squad for a year before getting cut, or at best ends up being a S/T guy who's 4th on the depth chart at his position.

So, there is no reason to get excited about this and absolutely no comparison with Ronnie Lott whatsoever.
