The high school where I work paid a hefty sum to one of Troy Smith's charitable foundations to get him as commencement keynote speaker for this year's graduating class. This is what they got for their money:

Aside from the very classy baseball cap and t-shirt during his 90 second 'speech', notice how he doesn't even exit through a normal door. He bolts out a side fire exit. Good work Troy. Good work.

it was 101 seconds

Haha, I was estimating.
Really though, 3-5 minutes and something remotely meaningful would've been acceptable.

He would have been outside in his car, texting the commencement.

Seriously? Your high school pays for a commencement speaker? Wow.

Yeah. Not sure that it comes from school budget though. It could be from the PTA or Senior Class funds or something like that.

We have a member from the graduating class 25 years prior speak at ours.

Why?

I mean, why him? Is there some reason he's considered particularly inspirational or does he have some connection to the school? He's obviously not a spellbinding orator or anything.

Just because he's a Raven who's more readily available than Ray Lewis or Joe Flacco, I guess.
Last year, they had Md's ex-gov Bob Earhlich as speaker.
I didn't even know Troy Smith was going to be the speaker until it happened.

I'm preaching at an ecumenical baccalaureate service this year. I'll give them a lot more than 101 seconds. I'll make it interesting too.
