Preseason Comments:

7/30/2010- Christian Ponder is one of the bigger names for this years QB class. From a big program, he will certainly get attention. Ponder throws over the top and has decent footwork. However, his ball will flutter, he has a fairly slow windup, and his arm strength is borderline. He makes good decisions, and has good pocket presence... he doesn't seem to get rattled in the pocket. He's able to scramble and gain some yards when he's flushed from the pocket. Ponder has the attention, he needs to show he can make all the throws and drill it in there.

Comments:

9/13/2010- vs. Okl.

1st Qtr:
10:11- Shows he has good feet and can run.9:20- Changes the play at the line, ends up being a decent run.
8:48- Shotgun. Went to his primary guy with 4 wides.
8:15- Looped it to the sidelines and badly off the mark.
7:24- Patient in the pocket. Waits for his TE to get open, throws a nice ball to him. He was his primary receiver.
6:13- Rolls right. Holds on to the ball for a big run.
0:49- Goes to the primary guy on a quick slant, decently thrown ball but high.
0:46- Gets rushed. However, has enough time to hit open recievers down field. He leaves teh pocket too early. Intentional grounding.

2nd Qtr:
14:41- Real nice mechanics on this throw. Average release speed. Average velocity.
13:04- Had all day and threw up a wobbling ball down the middle which was batted away. It was short and behind him. Arm strength looked really questionable.
12:16- Faked looking down the middle and then threw it to the flat on the left for a big gain. Designed play.
10:59- Facing to the right, had a man open on the right and didn't throw it to him. Instead tried to run and was stopped at the line.
9:54- Big pressure off the right. Sees it pre-snap and tries to run. Needs to learn to throw it away or throw short. Upon replay, a #84, is wide open on the short cross from the right side where the pressure was.
7:30- Nice pass to the primary guy.
5:46- Throws behind the primary guy on the short cross.
3:25- Horrible decision to throw into 4 defenders on the screen.
3:14- Throws the intermediate out route ball behind his receiver and too far out.
1:50- Throws way too high.

3rd Qtr:
10:15- Never saw the S bearing down on the WR. Telegraphed the throw with his eyes. Could have been picked.
9:34- Horrible throw for an INT. Behind the WR, and to a guy who is completely blanketed.
7:38- Throws to no one for yet another pick.
5:48- Again has a WR, #8, open over the short middle and chooses to run with it.
4:37- Makes a nice throw down the middle thats dropped. However, he never looked off the primary guy.

4th Qtr:
13:33- Waits forever and throws it short of the WR.
12:43- Has guys open in the middle and takes a sack.

In this game, Christian Ponder played pretty bad. He locks on to his primary guy almost exclusively and the defense read it. He under threw the ball way too much. But the worst part is his decision making. He held on to the ball too long with receivers open and took needless sacks or needless hits from trying to run it. He also made terrible choices throwing into heavy coverage or right at defenders. He has nice mechanics and can throw a tight spiral but his arm strength is a bit weak and he may struggle with down field throws. If you go strictly based off this game, he might only be a late round pick. Lets hope he rebounds.
