Browns coach Butch Davis gave Tim Couch a slight edge in the quarterback derby heading into this week's minicamp, but you'd never know it by watching yesterday's two-a-days.

Couch, who is still ahead by a hangnail, worked with the first team in the morning and Kelly Holcomb worked with the first team in the afternoon.

It appears to be an open competition, as promised.

"We're both getting a fair shake," Couch said. "It's great to have the support of your head coach, but I like the competition out there each day. It drives me and Kelly to be better. There are no days off when you've got competition behind you."

In the morning, Holcomb made some dazzling throws while working with the second team.

Picking up where he left off in the Pittsburgh playoff game - where he threw for 429 yards - he hit Quincy Morgan with a long bomb between two defenders down the left side. He also hit Dennis Northcutt in stride with an intermediate pass and struck his targets most of the morning.
