View Full Version : Is Kaberle the player that will put the Sabres over the top?

Toronto General Manager Brian Burke mentioned at the recent general managers' meetings that Tomas Kaberle's no-trade clause was set to expire and two teams have inquired about the defenseman. Kaberle is a power-play specialist, and the Sabres are admittedly in need of a blue-line quarterback.

Toronto is searching for forwards, and the Sabres were disappointed by center Tim Connolly and winger Drew Stafford during the playoffs.

according to the Montreal Gazette

According to various reports, at least four teams — Buffalo, Columbus, Anaheim and New Jersey —have shown serious interest in the veteran

Wouldn't bet the farm on him but obviously he wouldn't make the team worse.

One of the best puck moving defensemen in the league. Not really a scorer, but a helluva passer, and a great d-man. Sabres fans will be happy if they get Kaberle.

the bruins have been trying to get him for years

I think the Sabres are consistently mentioned as a team interested every 6 months when the Kaberle rumors start up again. At this point, it's like the boy who cried wolf when I read these rumors.

No...he won't put them over the top, but he could be a piece of the puzzle towards doing it. They need to acquire a Superstar center...or a player who will help the forwards produce up front and has better intangibles then most of the women on this roster.

I had a dream Connolly went to Toronto.. so maybe this is plausible?

That would be idea since Kaberle and Connolly are both entering the last year of their contracts. I'd hate for Buffalo to give up a lot to get a guy for maybe a year, unless they had an extension in hand for him to sign.

While I wouldn't mind acquiring Kaberle, he's not the solution to the Sabres' PP woes.

When the Sabres won the initial faceoff and were able to establish the zone, they generated scoring chances on the PP. Their big problem was re-establishing the zone after the clear. It's a coaching/system problem more than a talent problem.

He may not be the total solution, but I have no doubt that he would improve it to the point where they might actually score or generate more than 2 shots during a 4 minute PP.

Kaberle absolutely is an option, but I like signing Gonchar in free agency to a three or four-year deal more. Gonchar is arguably the best PP-QB in the league from the back end and wouldn't cost us any draft picks or players, unlike trading for Kaberle.

3-4 years for Gonchar? Are you nuts? He's 36 years old, and has had back to back injury plagued seasons. I'd give him a 1 year deal, with a club option for another, but 3-4 would be ******ed.

I'm thinking somebody might have been drinking a little before posting...

We really need to make some kind of move.. hate to state the obvious, but not much else can be said. Kaberle would surely be a nice acquisition. I would love to somehow get Brad Richards. One or the other.. or both.. Hey, a Sabres fan can dream right?

I was listening to WGR this morning and they mentioned that Burke wants immediate help for his team, not necessarily draft picks. It was then suggested that Stafford on his own wouldn't be enough and someone like Pominville could be trade bait.

This excites me more than what can be put into words.

I'll puke if that happens.

Almost.

I can't imagine it actually happening, so it's kind of like when I daydream of the lottery.
