Question about OLB in the 3-4, and Whitner

Could Whitner be converted to an OLB in the 3-4, or is he too small? His coverage would be adequate, and one of his strengths, supposedly, is run support. Could it be done, or would it be a waste of time?

Way too small. He could be used as an extra coverage guy in some formations, but he wouldn't officially be able to play the OLB position. He's a safety for sure.

Didn't Coy Wire play OLB for Atlanta for a few seasons?

Huge waste. He's much too small to take on blockers.

          I believe Atlanta runs a 4-3.

arent OLBs in the 3/4 supposed to be around 260 or so?

I think people are looking wayyyy too far into an OLB's coverage responsibilities, yeah it's part of what they'll be asked to do, but their coverage assignments are usually either covering the flat or dropping back into a short zone. A DB covering from the LB spot is closer to overkill than adequate, then leaving massive holes in that spot for everything except minor coverage.

Usually 245-255 on the weak side, 250-270 on the strong side. Yeah, there will be exceptions, but for the most part that's how it is.

Wire is 225, listed as an OLB, but mainly played on ST, only seeing about 200 snaps on D over the last two seasons. They also play a 4-3.

Can Whitner play SS or FS? No. No way in hell he could play LB.

i like whitner. it's not his fault senile levy drafted him way too high. i think he's a pretty decent safety. he just needs to learn to keep his mouth shut.
