Reps for Harris hard to come by

Bills rookie free agent SS Dominique Harris has a good physical skill set (http://www.buffalobills.com/news/article-3/S-Harris-hoping-to-be-part-of-another-turnaround/d727615c-012e-47e9-adc1-c9cb9ce9be8c), but he’s lined up at a position where the Bills have solid depth.
With veterans Donte Whitner, Bryan Scott and George Wilson all capable of playing strong safety, reps have been extremely hard to come by for Harris in the practice setting.
Such is the life of a rookie free agent at times. You want to show you have what it takes, but your reps are so limited, especially in a situation where the coaching staff needs to school up the vets on the new scheme as much as the rookies and you’re in a tough spot. We’ll see how things pan out for Harris moving forward.

Harris's time will be in the first couple of preseason games. He just needs to get his playbook down and then lower the boom on somebody.

Bills head coach Chan Gailey announced that while the club plans to name a No. 1 QB when it heads to training camp, the job is still open for competition. From what I am hearing, that QB will be Trent Edwards, and when you name a No. 1 before camp opens, it is his job to lose. Brian Brohm and Ryan Fitzpatrick will get reps, but Edwards should be the favorite to win the job.

Nobody is beating out Edwards in camp....

I am fine with seeing what gailey's O and coaching can do for a QB like Edwards...

but Brohm will be on deck if Edwards shows he can't progress.... and we will be drafting a top QB in 2011 more then likely.

6/21 Trent Edwards Transcript for Monday's OTA

On if he likes the idea of Coach Gailey’s pecking order by training camp: To be honest, I’m really not thinking that far ahead. I feel like that’s a long way in the distance for me. We still have an OTA tomorrow and a mini-camp coming up at the end of this week. So however it plays out that’s his decision. I really don’t think that far ahead so I’m worried about the OTA tomorrow.

On if he feels how far along he is after a month on the field:
I feel like we’re getting better each day. We’re making progress and that’s the encouraging part is that you always want to see improvements each day. And I feel like we’re seeing that from every player at every position on the team. So that’s nice that we’re grasping concepts, we’re understanding the playbook and that’s really all you can ask for as a player.

Wood feeling good (http://blogs.buffalobills.com/2010/06/21/wood-feeling-good/)

By Chris Brown - Posted June 21, 2010 – 3:27 pm
Eric Wood felt good after getting the chance to participate in practice Monday.
Wood said he did individual position work with his teammates for the first time since breaking his leg last season.
“I just did individual work today just within the offensive line. I’m excited to be out here and I’m ready to get back in team drills, but we’re going to take it slowly and I’m at odds with the trainers, but it’s fun,” Wood told Buffalobills.com ”We’ve had our fun in the training room now it’s time to get back out on the field and get to work with the guys. Now we’ve just got to get Demetrius going and hopefully toward the end of the week I’ll get back in some team drills.”
Wood is hopeful he can participate more extensively during minicamp later this week.

Edwards praises young WRs (http://blogs.buffalobills.com/2010/06/21/edwards-praises-young-wrs/)

By Chris Brown - Posted June 21, 2010 – 3:45 pm
Bills QB Trent Edwards was asked if he’s seen improvement in his game through the course of OTAs with respect to the offense. While he briefly addressed his own progress, he made sure to praise the young receiving corps.
“I still have a lot to learn,” said Edwards. ”There are still things I need to iron out. There are still things I need to get on the same page with some receivers. I like a lot of the young receivers we have. I think it’s the best group of young receivers we’ve had since I’ve been here. I’ve been really encouraged with those guys. Just getting on the same page with those guys. I’m happy with where my mechanics are but once you get content you’re not going to get any better. So I need to continue to improve and continue to get better.”
Players like Naaman Roosevelt, Donald Jones, Felton Huggins and Marcus Easley have all made plays in the practice setting as have James Hardy and Steve Johnson. What will be interesting to see is if those young wideouts are as successful once the pads go on in camp.
Edwards, much like Brian Brohm expressed last week, said the reps for the three quarterbacks has been nothing but fair.
“We’re splitting reps evenly,” Edwards said. ”I think they have it down to every single rep we’re getting and everyone gets the same amount. You can’t say one guy got more than the other guy. When it comes down to it you’ve got to make plays when you’re out there. And when you’re not you’ve got to sit back there and learn what you need to learn.”

Bills' Evans Prefers QB Clarity
Joe Buscaglia Reporting
JoeB@wgr550.com

If you think the ongoing quarterback dilemma for the Buffalo Bills is throwing fans for a loop, try being the number one wide receiver.

Lee Evans spoke to the media following the final voluntary session of organized team activities and said he'd rather have a guy in place sooner rather than later.

"I think it's important at anytime to have a stable quarterback and so the earlier you can name it the better," said Evans. "Those are decision that are out of my hands, but I trust that Chan has a plan for it because he's done it before and he knows how to win."

#3 on Schein's list of minicamp revelations.

C.J. Spiller has sizzle and savvy

We all knew the Clemson rookie could fly. And his strength at running back was very underrated and underappreciated during the draft process.

Spiller has opened eyes at Bills minicamp, impressing everyone in lovely Western New York with not only his performance on the field, but his sponge-like quality to pick up the playbook. Spiller is a bright guy and a football junkie. His work ethic has turned heads in Buffalo and puts him in position to make an immediate impact as a runner, receiver and returner this season.

Evans on Gailey (http://blogs.buffalobills.com/2010/06/22/evans-on-gailey/)

By Chris Brown - Posted June 22, 2010 – 3:14 pm
Bills WR Lee Evans has been through his share of coordinators and offenses in his six seasons with the Bills. He believes Chan Gailey and his history of success has the potential to turn a lot of the kinds of games Buffalo lost last season into wins.
“For one he’s done it before and number two I feel like his way of coaching and running this offense can work,” Evans told Buffalobills.com. ”But the bottom line is there’s a real fine line between winning and losing. We’ve been on the brink of wins and losses in the past. Hopefully his style of coaching and the way he runs things will help us get over the hump. We’re right there, we’ve just got to get over that little bitty hump and we can take the next step.”
One thing that’s clear with respect to the players on this roster. They’ve completely bought into Gailey’s approach and genuinely believe their head coach can improve their fortunes on offense and more importantly in the fourth quarter when a lot of their opportunities to win games last year fizzled.
Having everyone on board was step one and it appears that has already been accomplished.

OTA - Day 14 - Evans on WR corps, Schouman optimistic

By Chris Brown, Lead Journalist
Posted 30 minutes ago

As the voluntary OTA practices came to a close for the Bills Tuesday, wide receiver <nobr>Lee Evanshttp://www.buffalobills.com/assets/nflimg/icon-article-link.gif (http://www.buffalobills.com/team/roster/lee-evans/baad07e0-362a-498a-a88c-1b4a50e28616/)</nobr> provided his take on the number two receiver role, knowing whoever win the job will directly impact how he’s covered by opponents in the regular season.
Evans, who believes he’s got a good grasp of Chan Gailey’s offensive scheme himself is now making sure his fellows wideouts are giving it their best as the spring practices wind down.
“You’ve just got to push them a little bit and make sure they have high expectations of themselves because we have high expectations for them,” said Evans of the young receivers behind him on the depth chart. “It’s not necessarily criticizing them all the time, but doing things on the practice field to help them get better and if they can show improvement day by day then they’ll be fine.”

Wood update
Evans confirmed after Tuesday’s practice that <nobr>Eric Woodhttp://www.buffalobills.com/assets/nflimg/icon-article-link.gif (http://www.buffalobills.com/team/roster/eric-wood/28177895-2da7-45bc-bdcf-80ff3f3995f2/)</nobr> did participate in team work with the rest of the starting offensive line, and knowing how essential stability is up front the number one receiver was glad to see the former first-round pick back in the fold, even if it wasn’t full time.
“Those two young guys Eric and (Andy) Levitre played really, really well last year with Geoff (Hangartner) up front,” said Evans. “They have a real good chemistry with Geoff so right now that’s about that’s as solid as we’ve got right now. So it’s good to see Eric back in there with the unit and getting some reps and getting comfortable with what we’ve got going in.”

Edwards first with 1s (http://blogs.buffalonews.com/billboard/2010/06/edwards-first-with-1s.html)

The Bills opened their three-day mandatory minicamp this morning with a workout at Ralph Wilson Stadium, and Trent Edwards worked at quarterback with the starting unit. Ryan Fitzpatrick was second, Brian Brohm third and Levi Brown fourth in the quarterback rotation. However, coach Chan Gailey seemed to suggest that the even rotation that has taken place this spring will continue the next two days.
"You coming to practice this afternoon?" Gailey asked in response to a question on the rotation. "You'll see."
The Bills work from 3:55 to 5:15 p.m. today. They practice twice again Thursday and once on Friday. All workouts are closed to the public.
Everyone on the team was in attendance except for defensive end Aaron Schobel, who is planning on retiring. Linebacker Keith Ellison was not on the field due to a minor injury, Gailey said. Not practicing due to injuries were Demetrius Bell, Ed Wang, Nic Harris and Joe Klopfenstein. Terrence McGee, coming back from minor shoulder surgery, was limited.
We'll have to wait a couple days to see the significance of lineup rotations. Marshawn Lynch was third in the running back rotation behind Fred Jackson and C.J. Spiller. Lynch showed good burst when he did get his hands on the ball. Steve Johnson generally was No. 2 at receiver opposite Lee Evans. It was Roscoe Parrish on the field when the starters went to three wideouts. James Hardy got fewer snaps than Johnson. We'll see how that plays out the next three days.

Wood excited (http://blogs.buffalonews.com/billboard/2010/06/wood-excited.html)

Bills guard Eric Wood was upbeat after Wednesday's morning minicamp practice. Wood worked with the starters during both individual unit drills and in 11 on 11 team drills.
Wood, who suffered a compound fracture of his left leg last Nov. 12, said he's well ahead of schedule in his rehabilitation.
"Just to be able to come back out here and get to work, it feels really good," Wood said. "I guess we’re looking at seven months. They said it’d be a year so it feels good to be out here."
"They’re just limiting my reps," Wood said. "They’re not trying to push me too hard off the bat and hurt my recovery in any way. It’s healed but there’s still a lot going on down there that needs to be ironed out. They’re not giving me all the reps with the ones but I'm doing about half the reps. I didn't plan on being back for the end of OTAs but as the rehab went on it looked more realistic."
Said coach Chan Gailey: 'It’s huge for us. I’m glad he’s getting the reps, but moreso for the mental aspect for him. Now he’ll really be ready to go in training camp. I think this gives him a great jump start on that. You can watch the film and see he can play football. being out here and being able to communicate and get in the huddle and do those sort of things is big for us and big for him."

Greetings from One Bills Drive (http://espn.go.com/blog/afceast/post/_/id/14641/greetings-from-one-bills-drive)

By Tim Graham

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. -- One AFC East team hasn't completed its offseason yet.

The Buffalo Bills (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/clubhouse?team=buf) opened their mandatory minicamp Wednesday morning and will be on the field for the next three days. I will be reporting from their facility until they join the Miami Dolphins (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/clubhouse?team=mia), New York Jets (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/clubhouse?team=nyj) and New England Patriots (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/clubhouse?team=nwe) for a few weeks of vacation before training camps open in late July.

The Bills have several looming issues, more than most teams. But that's to be expected for a franchise that has a new head coach, a new general manager and hasn't been to the playoffs in a decade.

Bills coach Chan Gailey has stated he won't announce his quarterback depth chart until training camp, and even then it's in pencil. The offensive line is a serious concern. The defense is switching to a 3-4 scheme. There's curiosity over what the front office will do with frustrated running back Marshawn Lynch (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?playerId=10456), although I predict he'll be in a Bills uniform on opening day.

We'll address these issues and more over the next few days. So check back on the AFC East blog for a little extra Bills coverage.

I am hoping and praying he can get it done. I'd love nothing better than to see someone other than Edwards or Fitzpatrick starting come week one.

I've been saying all along though that the competition isn't over. A lot of people are quick to write off Brohm, but to be honest Edwards hasn't proved much of anything. If Brohm really wants the job and has any talent, it's his for the taking.

But the same can be said about Edwards. He has a clean slate with Gailey and will get a shot as well.

The only thing Brohm has to fear is Brohm himself.

Gailey lays out timetable (http://blogs.buffalobills.com/2010/06/23/gailey-lays-out-timetable/)

By Chris Brown - Posted June 23, 2010 – 1:48 pm
Bills head coach Chan Gailey was asked when he expects his offense to be fully functional, and Gailey didn’t pull any punches.
“Yeah, there’s a timetable,” said Gailey. ”Game one. That’s what it’s supposed to be. You better be hitting on all cylinders when you get to game one. That’s always been my expectation. When they turn on the clock and start keeping score for real, you better be ready.”
Buffalo’s opener is Sept. 12 against Miami at Ralph Wilson Stadium and with all the questions that need to be answered with respect to the offensive side of the ball and who might be playing where, it’s not surprising at all that Gailey pointed to the regular season as his deadline. At the same time he expressed confidence in their offensive scheme and how he believes it will help his players succeed.
“You better have confidence in this business,” he said. ”If you don’t have confidence in this business you’re going to lose in a hurry. We have confidence that our system will put guys in position to make plays. You’ve still got to go make them, but I think we’re going to have guys that have some talent. We’ve got to make sure that they get the opportunity to go be special on the field and that’s what we’re working on. You try to have confidence without being cocky.”

Minicamp - Day 1 - Offense gets gut check, Mitchell calls plays

By Chris Brown, Lead Journalist
Posted 31 minutes ago

Buffalo’s mandatory minicamp began with a pair of sessions scheduled for Wednesday and the morning practice saw the offense struggle at times when it came to team work. After a brief red zone segment where several passes were turned away by the defense, the 11-on-11 segment had some spotty execution. So much so that offensive coordinator Curtis Modkins pulled the entire offense in for a huddle.
“Coach Modkins did that,” said head coach Chan Gailey. “He talked about execution. They hadn’t done a good job of that up until that point and after that it got a little better.”
Shortly thereafter <nobr>Trent Edwardshttp://www.buffalobills.com/assets/nflimg/icon-article-link.gif (http://www.buffalobills.com/team/roster/trent-edwards/26db3ddb-7753-4604-ac7f-eb78856a889a/)</nobr> made four straight completions including a shot deep over the middle to a wide open <nobr>Jonathan Stuparhttp://www.buffalobills.com/assets/nflimg/icon-article-link.gif (http://www.buffalobills.com/team/roster/jonathan-stupar/8b901750-d604-49ed-a0a4-f63dc905f2e3/)</nobr> for a 20-25 yard pickup. As involved as Modkins is with the orchestration of the offense in the practice setting, Gailey interacts with the quarterbacks a lot between series and sometimes even between plays.

Fitz-Edwards share first-team (http://blogs.buffalonews.com/billboard/2010/06/fitzedwards-share-firstteam.html)

Ryan Fitzpatrick worked at quarterback with the first team offense for the first two sessions but not the third in Wednesday afternoon's minicamp practice. Fitzpatrick got the first chance in the 7 on 7 drill and in the 11-on-11 red-zone portion of practice. The team closed with two full-team two-minute drives. Edwards ran the first-team offense in that section, and Fitzpatrick ran the second two-minute drive with the second-string. Brian Brohm was third in the 7 on 7 and the red zone work but did not get a crack at the two-minute drill. I'm expecting Brohm to get more work with the "ones" on Thursday.
In the first two-minute drill, Edwards moved the offense from the 35 to the opposing 15. But on third-down he was hurried into an incompletion by a blitz and on fourth down he threw to the back of the end zone for Roscoe Parrish. It looked like Parrish got one foot down in bounds but not two. Rookie David Nelson caught two third-down conversions on the drive. George Wilson had two pass breakups on throws over the middle. Reggie Corner had a pass breakup on a throw for Lee Evans. Fitzpatrick took the backup offense 65 yards in eight plays, against second- and third-team defenders. He hit tight end Jon Stupar down the middle for a good gain, connected with James Hardy on a short throw to convert a fourth-down play and then hit Chad Jackson at the goal line on about a 15-yard TD throw.
Guard Eric Wood, who saw his most extensive action in the morning practice, rested in the afternoon. Replacing him with the starting line was Cordaro Howard, an undrafted rookie from Georgia Tech. Working with the second-team offensive line were, left to right, Nick Hennessey, Howard, Sean Allen, Kirk Chambers and Jamon Meredith (who also played left tackle with the first team). Kyle Calloway then subbed in for Meredith.
Highlights of 7 on 7 work included a diving sideline catch by Felton Huggins from Fitzpatrick, a good throw down the left sideline from Brohm to Evans, and another pass breakup by Drayton Florence vs. Parrish. Aaron Maybin and Chris Kelsay were the rush linebackers with the starters all afternoon.
Rian Lindell was 6 for 6 on field-goal tries, ranging from 33 yards to 53 yards.

My thoughts on the whole QB situation:

A. Brohm is out, and this will be verified if he doesn't get any first team reps this afternoon or tomorrow.

B. It's still open, and Brohm will get first team reps tomorrow.

C. Brohm won it and now they are figuring out which veteran to cut. (lol)

Fitz on QBs pecking order (http://blogs.buffalobills.com/2010/06/24/fitz-on-qbs-pecking-order/)

By Chris Brown - Posted June 24, 2010 – 11:36 am
The much talked about pecking order at quarterback that head coach Chan Gailey intends to have in place for training camp is something that at least one quarterback believes he’ll know before they leave following the final minicamp practices Friday.
“We haven’t talked about the pecking order in terms of what it’s going to be yet,” said Ryan Fitzpatrick. ”I’m sure before I leave here I’ll have a conversation with Chan just to kind of know his thoughts on how everything went, this offseason so far and the things I need to improve on going into camp.”
It makes sense that Gailey will speak with each of his signal callers about the situation. If he has the pecking order set in his mind already you’ve got to believe he’ll tell them or at least give them enough of his thoughts on the subject to satisfy them during the five week layoff before camp.

Young & Younger on OL (http://blogs.buffalonews.com/billboard/2010/06/young-younger-on-ol.html)

The Buffalo Bills' young backups are getting plenty of work on the offensive line this spring. With left tackle Demetrius Bell and right guard Eric Wood rehabilitating from injuries, it has meant plenty of practice repetitions for reserves. Jamon Meredith has played with the starters as the left tackle all spring. (A story on him is scheduled for Friday's paper). But Meredith was nursing a minor ailment Thursday. And rookie fifth-round draft pick Ed Wang, who has been No. 3 on the depth chart at left tackle, is out with a sprained ankle.
So the starting offensive line Thursday was, left to right, Nick Hennessey, Andy Levitre, Geoff Hangartner, Kirk Chambers and Cornell Green. The second-team O-line was, left to right, Hennessey, Cordaro Howard, Sean Allen, Chamberes and Kyle Calloway.
Brian Brohm took the snaps with the first-team offense. The breakdown went like this in the first portion of practice: Brohm 4 plays, Trent Edwards 4, Ryan Fitzpatrick 4. Then Brohm got 8, Edwards 5 and Fitzpatrick 7, followed by rookie Levi Brown for three plays.
Brohm had a good completion deep down the right sideline to Steve Johnson on the first play of team work. Johnson made a one-handed grab. Fitzpatrick had a good strike to Donald Jones on a slant, then made a nifty lofted completion deep down the middle to Marcus Easley. It looked like a bust by the third-teamers in the secondary. On his second series, Brohm had good-looking completions to Johnson on a slant and Lee Evans on the sideline. Jones made a good diving catch on a slant from Edwards. Naaman Roosevelt had a good catch on an out-route from Fitzpatrick. James Hardy was hobbled a bit and his repetitions were limited. Reggie Torbor continued to get more snaps than Aaron Maybin with the starters at outside linebacker. Marshawn Lynch continued to be a clear No. 3 to Fred Jackson and C.J. Spiller in plays at running back, which is no surprise since Lynch stayed away from most spring practices.
The Bills work again this afternoon then have one more closed practice Friday morning before dispersing until training camp.

Minicamp - Day 2 - QB rotation continues, Fitz sees answers at WR

Everyone is trying to get a handle on just who might have the edge in Buffalo’s quarterback competition, but with just one minicamp practice remaining there is little indication of any leanings on the part of the coaching staff.

That's because the rotation at the quarterback position continues. A day after Ryan Fitzpatrick was the first quarterback through in 7-on-7 and 11-on-11, Fitzpatrick was third in the rotation. The signal callers don’t know where they stand yet, but knowing a depth chart will be put in place come training camp getting answers before they leave after the final practice Friday is of interest to them.

“We haven’t talked about the pecking order in terms of what it’s going to be yet,” said Fitzpatrick. “I’m sure before I leave here I’ll have a conversation with Chan just to kind of know his thoughts on how everything went, this offseason so far and the things I need to improve on going into camp.”

Judging by WGR and Buffalo News' reports Brohm has been the most consistent.

Since rookie minicamp (where he sucked BAD by all reports) Brohm has shown the most consistency in redzone and team work.

Now that is just based off a few paragraphs and 15 second clips. But so far, the only ones in attendance at the OTAs and mini camps that has given any indication that Trent has been better is Chris Brown.

Jackson presence (http://blogs.buffalonews.com/billboard/2010/06/jackson-presence.html)

Chad Jackson is a former second-round draft choice of the New England Patriots who sort of never got a great chance to produce on that team's star-studded receiving corps and who also reportedly didn't quite work hard enough upon being drafted to suit the Patriots' liking. Nevertheless, he has another chance with the Bills this season and he made his presence known in Thursday afternoon's practice at Ralph Wilson Stadium. Jackson showed good hands in picking a quick throw from Trent Edwards out of the air for a touchdown on a slant pattern in the 7 on 7 red-zone period. Jackson has been running behind Steve Johnson on the depth chart this week. But Jackson did hook up with Edwards on a solid out pattern vs. Terrence McGee on Wednesday morning and caught an out from Brian Brohm Thursday morning.
Edwards took the first snaps Thursday afternoon with the first-team offense. Ryan Fitzpatrick was second in the first 11 on 11 drill and the 7 on 7 drill. Brian Brohm was second in the second 11 on 11 drill. Reggie Torbor and Kawika Mitchell took the afternoon session off, watching from the sidelines. Edwards hit David Nelson over the middle for a score in 7 on 7 work. Brohm hit Marcus Easley and Shawn Nelson for scores on slants. Ellis Lankster picked off an out pass from Brohm, but it looked like a case of the defense recognizing the play well before the snap of the ball. The Bills close their spring practice schedule with one workout Friday morning.

Wang and Bell update (http://blogs.buffalobills.com/2010/06/25/wang-and-bell-update/)

By Chris Brown - Posted June 25, 2010 – 10:07 am
It looks like getting back on the practice field for Ed Wang and Demetrius Bell will have to wait until training camp.
Wang and Bell are both spectators here at One Bills Drive on the last day of Bills minicamp.
Wang was injured earlier this month in OTAs while Bell never took the field this spring as his rehab from knee surgery continues.

QBs won’t know pecking order (http://blogs.buffalobills.com/2010/06/25/qbs-wont-know-pecking-order/)

By Chris Brown - Posted June 25, 2010 – 12:23 pm
Ryan Fitzpatrick commented on Thursday that he hoped he and his fellow QBs might get some idea as to where they stood in the quarterback pecking order before they left Friday for their five week break before training camp. But that won’t be the case.
Head coach Chan Gailey when asked when he will tell his quarterbacks what the pecking order will be responded with the following.
“When they come back,” said Gailey.
That means the QBs won’t know until they report for training camp at St. John Fisher on July 28th.
Gailey also reiterated that the quarterback depth chart once its laid out at the start of training camp is not set “in concrete.” So even though there will be a 1, 2 and 3 rotating through in the early stages of camp, it will still be subject to change and the competition will still be open.

Gailey calls QB race “close” (http://blogs.buffalobills.com/2010/06/25/gailey-calls-qb-race-close/)

By Chris Brown - Posted June 25, 2010 – 12:30 pm
Bills head coach Chan Gailey was asked at the close of the team’s spring practices whether or not he knew what his QB pecking order would be. He provided the answer to that question along with his assessment of the QB race.
“Yes,” said Gailey as to whether he had a QB pecking order in his head.
Then he made it clear that when that order is revealed in training camp not to get carried away with the order.
“It’s still open,” he said. ”Don’t read too much into who takes the first snap, who takes the second snap and who takes the third snap. Don’t read too much into that. It’s close.”
Saying it’s close is Gailey’s first assessment of the quarterback competition. Through the spring no signal caller has definitively separated themselves from the other two as the clear number one.
There’s little doubt Gailey and his offensive staff are hoping one of the three performs at a noticeably higher level and with more consistency than the other two candidates for the job so the decision is a clear one.

Gailey calls it wide open (http://blogs.buffalonews.com/billboard/2010/06/gailey-calls-it-wide-open.html)

Buffalo Bills coach Chan Gailey essentially declared the team's starting quarterback competition wide, wide open today as the team completed its last minicamp practice in Orchard Park.
Gailey said he has a pecking order in mind for who will be the No. 1 among Trent Edwards, Ryan Fitzpatricck and Brian Brohm to start training camp. But he said he does not plan to tell the players until they come back to town for training camp, which starts July 29. And he said it won't matter too much who starts out No. 1.
Said Gailey: "We have three guys. They got pretty much equal reps during OTAs and minicamps. We'll go to camp. We'll have a pecking order but nothing's in concrete. Everybody's still gonna have a chance to win the job."
Asked why he plans to wait until camp to tell the players his decision, Gailey said:
"Well, it's still open. Don't read too much into who takes the first snap and who takes the second snap and who takes the third snap (in training camp). Don't read too much into that. It's close."
And he stressed whoever is No. 3 still will be in the running. "(No. 3) still has a shot," Gailey said.
On the medical front, Gailey offered good news about prospective starting left tackle Demetrius Bell, who has been rehabilitating all offseason from knee surgery. Gailey said Bell will be ready to practice at the start of camp at St. John Fisher College in suburban Rochester.
"I think he's ahead of schedule," Gailey said. "At one time it was a question of whether he would make the first of training camp. I think now there's no question he'll make the first of training camp."

WR jobs wide open, too (http://blogs.buffalonews.com/billboard/2010/06/wr-jobs-wide-open-too.html)

The Bills will have a lot of work to do in training camp to figure out how there receiving corps shakes out.
Coach Chan Gailey acknowledged that position is wide open as well when the team gets to St. John Fisher College.
Just what do the Bills have after No. 1 wideout Lee Evans? It's still hard to say. Judging from practice repetitions during the three-day minicamp, third-year man Steve Johnson will be giving third-year man James Hardy a strong run for a starting job. It's pretty clear veteran Roscoe Parrish is going to get much more of a chance to contribute out of the slot than he got last season.
Hardy's practice repetitions were limited. He underwent an offseason operation on his groin, and Gailey acknowledged that cut into his work on the field during the spring. "He told me he felt a lot better these last two weeks than he had the first few practices," Gailey said.
Undrafted rookie David Nelson, a 6-foot-5 wideout from Florida, also got plenty of action on the outside with the first offensive unit the past three days. Fourth-round draft pick Marcus Easley showed good hands during the spring.
"It's really wide open," Gailey said of the wideout rotation. "I hate to put numbers on 'em. Y'all put numbers on 'em. I hate to put numbers on 'em. We're going to probably, probably - don't hold me to this - but probably have five that we keep (active) on game day. And all five have gotta be a big part of what we're doing."
The Bills' coaches mixed all of the receivers in varying combinations during the spring. Veterans Chad Jackson and Felton Huggins and rookies Naaman Roosevelt and Donald Jones all also were cycled through the rotations with each of the quarterbacks. Roosevelt, the Buffalo native and University at Buffalo star, showed good hands and did not look out of place out there.
In Friday's practice, Ryan Fitzpatrick took the first snaps at quarterback in each of the first four different practice periods. Trent Edwards went second in three of the four periods. The Bills ran one two-minute drill at the end of practice and Brohm got to run it.
Good offensive plays during red-zone work included a Fitzpatrick completion to Lee Evans on the right side of the end zone after the quarterback was flushed out of the pocket. Fitzpatrick then hit Evans on a perfect fade pass to the left side of the end zone. Shawn Nelson showed his talent by making a leaping grab of an Edwards pass on the left side of the end zone. ... Brohm double-clutched on a short pass for Easley and it was picked off by Andra Davis. Brohm marched the backups 50 yards for a score on the two-minute drill, hitting Jones on an out route at the goal line for a TD.

It's been a good week for Buffalo Bills (http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/teams/BUF) quarterback Brian Brohm (http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/players/34556/Brian_Brohm).
Entering his third NFL season out of Louisville, Brohm was the headliner throughout the Bills' three-day mandatory mini-camp, their last team activities prior to training camp. Stuck in what appears to be a three-way race for the team's starting quarterback job, that string of headlines has created a palpable buzz around the team's biggest QB unknown.
On Wednesday, WGR 550 reporter Joe Buscaglia supplied us with the following headline: "Brohm Shines, Edwards Struggles." (http://www.wgr550.com/pages/7534908.php) Brohm didn't get as many reps as either Trent Edwards (http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/players/16652/Trent_Edwards) or Ryan Fitzpatrick (http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/players/3219/Ryan_Fitzpatrick) that day, but out-played both.
On Thursday, Brohm took reps with the first-team offense (http://blogs.buffalonews.com/billboard/2010/06/young-younger-on-ol.html) in the morning session. Not exactly a big deal, as it wasn't the first time he'd done that, but it was reported with a certain amount of fervor.
Brohm's stock got its biggest lift on Friday, when, at the close of mini-camp, head coach Chan Gailey went out of his way to note Brohm's progress over the last two weeks (http://www.nickmendola.com/brohm-makes-a-jump-at-minicamp/):

"He's made a jump in my opinion in the last two weeks. I thought he practiced well. We'll have to see how he progresses once we get pads on and all that. But I thought he made a good jump." Bills waive a safety (http://blogs.buffalobills.com/2010/06/25/bills-waive-a-safety/)

By Chris Brown - Posted June 25, 2010 – 2:07 pm
Not long after the close of the team’s mandatory minicamp, the Bills parted ways with one of their rookie safeties.
Rookie free agent safety Brett Johnson was waived by the club Friday afternoon just hours after the last spring practice.
Johnson was in a difficult numbers game from the beginning with veterans at both strong and free safety. Johnson was a free safety in his time in Buffalo, but his reps on defense were very few and far between.
The only rookie safety left on the roster is undrafted Temple product Dominique Harris.

Bills minicamp notes and observations (http://espn.go.com/blog/afceast/post/_/id/14712/bills-minicamp-notes-and-observations)

By Tim Graham

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. -- The Buffalo Bills (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/clubhouse?team=buf) wrapped up their three-day minicamp Friday and broke for the summer. Here are some random thoughts from their five practices ...
It was difficult to get any kind of idea what the offense will look like. Not only did head coach Chan Gailey rotate his top three quarterbacks through first-team rotations, but he also did the same with his skill players. For example, in a seven-on-seven drill Thursday afternoon, Trent Edwards (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?playerId=10536) took the "first-team" reps, but his touchdown passes went to Chad Jackson (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?playerId=9622) and undrafted rookie David Nelson (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?playerId=13621).
I'm no scout, but I thought Edwards looked better than Ryan Fitzpatrick (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?playerId=8664) and Brian Brohm (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?playerId=11290). Edwards threw a nice ball and didn't seem to make as many mistakes as Fitzpatrick and Brohm did.
Brohm did close out the last practice well. Shortly after throwing an interception right to linebacker Andra Davis (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?playerId=3669), he came back in a two-minute drill and found Donald Jones (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?playerId=13597) for a touchdown on the final play of minicamp.
Wide receiver James Hardy (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?playerId=11275), the 41st overall pick two years ago, looked like he still was getting into shape. Gailey said Friday that Hardy had been slowed down this spring but didn't say why. Turns out Hardy underwent sports hernia surgery after last season and couldn't work out for six weeks, a league source said.
Buffalo's defensive backs have incredible hands. There's an old saying that if defensive backs could catch, then they would be wide receivers. But when I watched the Bills' secondary go through individual drills, the ball rarely touched the turf.
Running back Marshawn Lynch (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?playerId=10456) didn't look obviously out of place for having missed almost every voluntary offseason workout, but Gailey noted Lynch was behind the rest of the offense in terms of knowing the playbook.

"I don't think he's caught up," Gailey said. "You can't miss that much and be caught up, but he seems to be a fairly quick study."
Aaron Schobel (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?playerId=2594) still appears on Buffalo's roster at outside linebacker, even though the two-time Pro Bowl pass-rusher hasn't shown up all spring or summer and came close to announcing his retirement two weeks ago.
Gailey called the July 29 start to training camp a "natural" deadline.

"Our stance hasn't changed," Gailey said. "Nothing has changed. We would have liked to have him here, but he chose not to. He's got a tough decision in his life to make, and we understand that. It's not like we don't understand. We do. He'll have a lot of catching up to do when he gets here."
Left tackle Demetrius Bell (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?playerId=11453) watched the entire offseason while recovering from knee surgery, but Gailey said Bell will be ready to participate when training camp opens.
The Bills have one of the league's best kicker-punter combinations in Rian Lindell (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?playerId=2489) and Brian Moorman (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?playerId=2797). The club didn't bother to bring in any other legs. The Bills didn't spend much time practicing field goals, but when they did Lindell was perfect, hitting from as deep as 53 yards by my spot.
Compared to the other AFC East workouts I attended, the Bills were quieter and more reserved -- probably due to the fact they're installing a new offense and learning a 3-4 defense.
The Miami Dolphins (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/clubhouse?team=mia) have that militaristic feel under barking head coach Tony Sparano, while the New York Jets (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/clubhouse?team=nyj) are highly animated with a lot of trash talk going back and forth between the offense and defense.
