    Bills ranked 5th best secondary

I think we can all accept the fact that the NFL is a passing league. In the Super Bowl last year there were 84 pass attempts for 621 yards and just 37 rushing plays for 150 yards. Despite all of those passing attempts, the game featured only one sack. The smart teams are building up their secondary even when they already have a solid unit. The Jets had a top-flight secondary last year, and still traded for Antonio Cromartie and drafted Kyle Wilson in the first round.

Defensive backs are tricky to evaluate. There are only four on the field during the early downs in the base defense, but the defense can shift to the nickel, featuring five defensive backs, at any time. In fact, the nickel back is a primary starter more than you would think in the modern game. When an offense goes to four wide receivers or employs its hurry-up offense, the secondary can even go to six players on the field.

Given the importance of the defensive backfield, I thought I would try to rank the top five secondaries for 2010 based on the following criteria:

    1. Prerformance in 2009. This was based on how opposing passers performed against them in terms of yards per pass attempt, completion percentage, passes attempted, number of 20-plus yard pass plays, 40-plus yard pass plays, sacks and passer rating.
    2. Additions and subtractions in the offseason.
    3. Production of the starting cornerbacks.
    4. Are the safeties interchangeable?
    5. The quality of the nickel back.
    6. The depth to build a dime defense.
    7. The presence of a lockdown corner.
    8. The presence of an elite safety.

Based on the above criteria, here are the top eight secondaries from last season: Jets, Bills, Bengals, Packers, Saints, Eagles, Panthers, and Broncos.
There are a number of impressive defensive backfields around the NFL right now, but five units stand above the rest. Find out which team leads the way among that elite group.

We need Maybin to post an 8+ sack season and Poz to play lights out.

Oh, and a NT to emerge would be great.

Bills had the 3rd best according to Football Outsiders, and their fancy calculators. If they actually manage to stop the run, and generate a better pass rush, we're going to have a tough D.

That doesn't explain all of it but it is a major factor.

Clearly, 28 INT's is excellent, considering how little teams chose to pass on us. But the reality is that the Bills' secondary didn't face as many passes as the other teams on that list since the run D was so bad and the D was on the field far too long.

On a side note, it's good to see Florence getting some credit. The guy quietly had a great year last season and I don't think enough people noticed.

You have to look at it this way: when you are so bad against the run, it allows other teams to extend drives, and thereby have even more plays.

The Bills defense was on the field for more plays than any other team last year. True stat.

12 other teams were passed on more than the Bills, yet the Bills were still second in the league in interceptions, and only one other team allowed fewer passing TDs. All this basically without McKelvin, who could turn into a star. The most passed on team's opponents only attempted 85 more passes than the Bill's opponents.

We definitely have a top five secondary, and our depth there is fantastic.

Also, teams ran against us more than passed because our secondary is so good. It works both ways. If we could stop the run, we'd have a monster defense. Being on the field so long wipes players out.

Hopefully our youngsters won't play with ego's this year. When you let your guard down thinking you are the best, you will get burnt in the NFL.

Some interesting points from the article...

-Asomugha isn't mentioned in the lockdown section.

-The Jets had fewer sacks than the Bills last season (according to Kirwan, anyway...the league had the teams tied w/32)

-I wish we still had Greer.
