Veteran Washington Redskins offensive lineman Mike Williams, who overcame weight problems to become a valuable member of the unit in his first season with the team, is expected to miss the 2010 season because of blood clots near his heart, two people familiar with the situation said late Friday night.

Williams, projected to compete for a starting spot at right guard, was hospitalized recently because the problem, the team sources said. Although Williams has been released from the hospital, the organization is concerned that his condition could be career-threatening and likely will keep him off the field for at least the upcoming season, which gets underway July 29 when the team begins its first training camp under Coach Mike Shanahan.

Williams did not immediately return a text message to his cellphone Friday night. Speaking on behalf of the organization, Tony Wyllie, Redskins senior vice president, declined to comment on Williams's medical status.

for a couple years now, we've been hearing how health professionals expected a lineman or someone like that to die while playing since these guys have gotten sooooo big.

Best of luck to Mike Williams on a road to speedy recovery.

that sucks but it doesn't help that he probably sat on the couch for three years and pounded down greasy food. for his sake i hope they can fix him up and he can keep playing.

a good old southern diet will do that to a person....

my grandparents use to fry everything, and lots of it. They both had lots of complications in the end...

I wish Mike Williams nothing but the best and speedy recovery.

Im glad he turned his career around and I only wish it could of been with Buffalo.

I, too, wish Williams the best. But he still seems like a rather mediocre player, as he is "projected to compete for a starting spot at right guard." A former number 4 overall pick at LT, and he still hasn't secured a starting spot at guard?

good luck Mike!

Seemed like a nice enough guy when he was here!

he's still a fat waste of a draft pick.
