<!-- end wide photo -->Right about now, the top-notch NFL rookies are sitting at home, packing their bags and calculating money lost in interest while they hold out. They're also wondering how great they can be in their first NFL season. For the best players, the question isn't will they make the squad, it's will they start right away or have to beat out a gaggle of savvy NFL vets.
But they're not the only ones playing strategist. Fans love a good position battle between some upstart and an aging player who is gripping a paycheck with his fingernails. These are the most captivating stories at training camp.

C.J. Spiller (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?playerId=13203), RB, Buffalo Bills (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/clubhouse?team=buf) --8-1

Staley says: Another running back -- the first one taken in the draft. The concern is will he get the necessary touches playing with a veteran like Fred Jackson (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?playerId=10195) and Marshawn Lynch (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?playerId=10456), who is the wild card. This number is solely based on the fact there is a crowded backfield, but that may change as training camp winds down.
Value alert, value alert! Spiller was crazy good in college, rushing for more than 1,200 yards his senior year and never gaining less than 5.3 yards per carry in a season. Meanwhile, Lynch has been too much of a head case to prove he can last through a season. Fred Jackson gained 1,000 yards last year, but that was because he earned 200 playing against Indy's second- and third-string D in Week 17. If the Bills were convinced he was a top line guy, they would have passed on Spiller. They have plenty of needs.

He's just as big as Chris Johnson, is in the same ballyard in speed, and is probably a better receiver. Now if they feed him the ball then 8-1 is nice value.
