Re: Holdouts
Don't know if he was the first, but Elway is probably one of the earliest well-known ones. He refused to play for the Baltimore Colts and ended up getting traded to Denver. Bo Jackson was another odd case, though that was a few years after Elway."Misguided political correctness tethers our intellects."

Tom Cousineau was the first player selected in the NFL draft in 1979 by Buffalo. He never signed and went to the CFL for 3-4 years before playing with the Browns later.Anonymity is an abused privilege, abused most by people who mistake vitriol for wisdom and cynicism for wit

A hold out is a guy who stays home, doesn't collect $'s, doesn't play

Re: Holdouts
Jay Berwanger, the first player ever to win the Heisman trophy and first player to ever be drafted in the collegian NFL draft.
Drafted in 1936, rights traded, never played a down in the NFL to pursue more lucrative ventures.
There's your first holdout....technically.
