May be a dumb question (not Bills related either, sorry), but I was just thinking who was the first big name player to holdout...When did players stop honoring their contracts early and want more money...I have been Googling been havent found anything....Thanks...

Don't know if he was the first, but Elway is probably one of the earliest well-known ones. He refused to play for the Baltimore Colts and ended up getting traded to Denver. Bo Jackson was another odd case, though that was a few years after Elway.

Ahh...to be young. How soon we forget.

Tom Cousineau was the first player selected in the NFL draft in 1979 by Buffalo. He never signed and went to the CFL for 3-4 years before playing with the Browns later.

He wasn't a hold out ... he signed a better deal with a different league. Bottom line - he got paid more $'s to play football than the Bills were offering.

A hold out is a guy who stays home, doesn't collect $'s, doesn't play

Not much better. The Bills never got to make a 2nd offer after lowballing him with their 1st at 1.2 Mil for 5 years. He would have gotten more.

Jay Berwanger, the first player ever to win the Heisman trophy and first player to ever be drafted in the collegian NFL draft.

Drafted in 1936, rights traded, never played a down in the NFL to pursue more lucrative ventures.

There's your first holdout....technically.

By the way, the walking on water was a scam...

I fitted the Messiah with stilts before that publicity stunt happened.
