Tests results showed yesterday that starting cornerback Fernando Bryant had not suffered what the team feared was a sports hernia.

Bryant has missed the past five practices with what coach Jack Del Rio originally said was a hamstring injury. But Del Rio said yesterday that Bryant had developed pain in his groin, prompting the team to examine him for a sports hernia.

A sports hernia occurs when repeated athletic activity weakens the inner wall of the lower abdomen. The injury causes intense abdominal pain and requires surgery and 6-to-8 weeks of recovery time.

"The word back was that it wasn't anything major, and he should be OK," Del Rio said. "We should get Fernando back next week."

The Jaguars end their June on-field work with three days of practice starting next Tuesday. Del Rio is concluding this week's session by taking the team on a deep-sea fishing trip today
