Jail Threat Remains In Pittman Case

TAMPA - Michael Pittman's wife may be willing to reconcile with her husband, but that won't necessarily keep the Bucs running back out of jail and on the football field.
In hopes they won't pursue the matter, Melissa Pittman told prosecutors she won't press charges, but the Maricopa County (Ariz.) Attorney's Office doesn't need her cooperation to proceed. Pittman was charged with two counts of aggravated assault after his May 31 arrest in Phoenix, and a preliminary hearing is set for Monday.

``Prosecutors can go forward with cases after a victim recants, if they have corroborating evidence,'' Assistant Hillsborough State Attorney Pam Bondi said. ``It depends on the facts in each case, but unfortunately, this [the victim's not wanting to pursue charges] is very common in domestic-violence cases.''

Though Melissa Pittman may be forgiving, she wasn't the only one involved in the incident. The couple's babysitter, Kristina Hegland, also is listed in the formal complaint.
