    Schefter's Bills Postcard

    Nothing really groundbreaking (LINK), but there was this:

    But it would not be a surprise to see the stalemate last into, and past, the Bills' first preseason game. Spiller has been speaking with running back Fred Jackson and texting with quarterback Trent Edwards, who are sympathetic to the rookie's situation.
    This too:

    They no longer have Schobel, the two-time Pro Bowl defensive end whom the team decided to release Wednesday. The Bills had little choice because they didn't want to be on the hook financially.
    For starters, Schobel had a $2 million roster bonus that was due in March. The bonus was retroactive until the Bills released Schobel. All Schobel would have had to do to collect it was show up at the Bills' camp to take his physical. If Schobel passed the test, the Bills would be on the hook for $2 million.
    If the Bills flunked him on his physical, they would have been obligated to pay the $6.025 million base salary on Schobel's contract that was guaranteed for injury.
    Because the Bills didn't want to pay the $2 million roster bonus or the $6.025 million base salary, they released him.
    Though Schobel expressed reluctance to play for the Bills, he is eager to play somewhere this season. Teams around the league still want him playing defensive end.
    Schobel is from Houston and is close with Houston Texans defensive line coach Bill Kollar; the Texans are an option. They're one of several teams that need a pass-rushing defensive end.

    here's a real soft spot in this reporter's heart for the Bills. In fact, my fantasy football team is called The Bills -- simply because three Brother-In-Laws (BILLS) make up our team. So it's hard to root against the NFL namesake of our family's fantasy football team.
    I'd have never guessed, considering some of the stuff he writes.

          What exactly is his situation? He is in a certain slot in the draft where he will make a little less than the guy before him and a little more than the guy after what the hell is so hard to figure out about that? I'm pretty fed up with both sides on this one it's getting pretty silly at this point.

            Schefter is throwing crap at the wall, like all the other monkeys ( Mort,Clayton etc.) at ESPN, praying something sticks.

              If it was that easy, it would be done by now. Either Spiller's side is looking for more than his slot dictates (#8 or better) or the Bills are offering less (#10 or worse). Could be either, but I would guess it is the former.

                McClain = 5 yrs, 40mil, 23mil guaranteed.
                Alualu = 5 yrs, 28mil, 17.5 guaranteed.

                That puts Spiller at 5 years, 34mil, 20.25 guaranteed.

                He won't settle for less. If it's equal to the above, blame the front office. More, blame the player and his agent.

                  I wouldn't necessarily say that, as it all depends on who ends up caving. If it ends up being equal to the 20.25 guaranteed, it could be because 1) the FO was lowballing him and then finally decided to agree to slot him appropriately, or 2) Spiller wanted more, but eventually realized he wasn't going to get more than he was slotted to make, so agreed to the appropriate amount.

                        No, his agent is Gary Wichard. Crabtree's agent is Eugene Parker, who has a history of clients holding out.

                        Some other players Wichard represents: Jason Taylor, Dwight Freeney, Terrell Suggs, Keith Bulluck, Antonio Cromartie, Elvis Dumervil, Darren Sproles.

                        Some other guys in this draft his represents: Arrelious Benn, Jimmy Clausen, Everson Griffen, Taylor Mays.

                          I believe Parker represented Jason Peters as well.
