Night practice pushed back (http://blogs.buffalobills.com/2010/08/09/nite-practice-pushed-back/)

By Chris Brown - Posted August 9, 2010 – 8:51 am
For those Bills fans coming out to practice tonight (Mon.) the session has been pushed back.
Instead of starting at 7 it will begin at 7:15 pm. In fact every practice open to the public this week will be pushed back 15 minutes.
So Tuesday’s afternoon practice will now start at 3:15 pm and the Wed. night practice will be at 7:15 pm as well.

Two players on the offensive side of the ball are back practicing.
RB Chad Simpson and WR David Nelson are both back practicing after missing time late last week.
Nelson was expected to be out “a while” according to Chan Gailey last week, but missed just 3 days of practice.

<!-- .post --> Poz and Ellison back (http://blogs.buffalobills.com/2010/08/09/poz-and-ellison-back/)

By Chris Brown - Posted August 9, 2010 – 9:07 am
Paul Posluszny said it would be 2 weeks before he was back on the practice field, but it looks like it’ll just be a week and a half.
Poz is warming up with his fellow LBs here at practice this morning. He has minor groin surgery 2 weeks before camp opened.
Keith Ellison is also back in action. It’s been a long time coming, but Ellison is also back in pads here Monday morning.
For Ellison its his first practice action since participating sparingly in the spring.
We’ll have further updates after practice.

Bills FB Corey McIntyre is headed to the locker room with an injury.
He appeared to get rolled up on a run play off right tackle. McIntyre hopped on one foot to the sideline where he was tended to by trainers.
He walked to the locker room himslef, but very gingerly put weight on his right foot all the way.

Nice to see Nelson is back. It looked as though he was in a fight for a roster spot before the injury. IMO it's very possible that he could replace Hardy on the roster. I'm pretty excited for preseason to see which of our young WR's can step up.

Honestly, I'm ready for Huggins to move on. While I have zero faith in Dick Jauron's talent evaluations, Huggins seems to be too inconsistent and has developed far too slowly to merit any long-term commitment to him. I'd really rather see what Nelson and Donald Jones have, personally.

Schobel still deciding (http://blogs.buffalobills.com/2010/08/09/schobel-still-deciding/)

By Chris Brown - Posted August 9, 2010 – 11:00 am
Aaron Schobel said he’d take a couple of more weeks to decide if he’s playing in 2010 or not for another NFL club. For now that timetable seems to be accurate.
Though Houston DE Mario Williams is still dealing with inflammation in his hip, which is keeping him out of action in the camp setting with the Texans, Schobel remains undecided about his playing future. As ESPN blogger Paul Kuharsky astutely points out, the longer he waits and the more time Williams misses, the higher Schobel’s price tag could climb (http://espn.go.com/blog/afcsouth/post/_/id/13724/mario-williams-off-for-second-opinion).
Kuharsky also notes that the Seahawks had expressed interest as well as the Patriots, but Houston in light of Schobel’s family situation appears to be the only serious consideration.

Poz still limited (http://blogs.buffalobills.com/2010/08/09/poz-still-limited/)

By Chris Brown - Posted August 9, 2010 – 10:47 am
Bills LB Paul Posluszny, who made his return to the practice field Monday off minor groin surgery, is still not all the way back just yet.
Poz participated in individual position drills and got a handful of reps in 7-on-7, but no 11-on-11 team work.
“It felt good just to be out there running around with the guys,” Posluszny said. “I didn’t do much, but it felt good just to see some routes develop, react a little bit. See the world through a facemask again. It felt good to be back out there.”
Poz said he was generally pleased with his recall in terms of executing plays at speed, but said he has some work to do. He also says he’s got a ways to go physically, which leaves his chances of participating in the team’s first preseason game Friday night in Washington up in the air.

OL backups get work (http://blogs.buffalonews.com/billboard/2010/08/ol-backups-get-work.html)

Aug 9, 2010 12:32:51 PM / Comment (http://blogs.buffalonews.com/billboard/2010/08/ol-backups-get-work.html#comments)
The Bills rested three offensive line starters in Monday morning's closed practice. Left tackle Demetrius Bell was held out entirely as the Bills continue to ease him back into action after his knee surgery of last year. Guard Eric Wood worked only in some individual drills. (He may work more fully in tonight's practice.) Right tackle Cornell Green remains out with a minor leg injury.
So the backups got quality practice snaps. The first-team offensive line included, left to right, Jamon Meredity, Andy Levitre, Geoff Hangartner, Cordaro Howard and Kirk Chambers. The second team line included guard Jason Watkins working at left tackle, tackle Nick Hennessey flexing to left guard, center Sean Allen, Andre Ramsey at right guard and rookie Kyle Calloway at right tackle. Given the fact Bell has been limited in 11 on 11 work, it's unlikely he will play in the preseason opener against Washington on Saturday. It would be good for the Bills if Green is back by then, which we think he will be.
Roscoe Parrish sat out Monday morning due to a minor leg injury, so former Patriot Chad Jackson took his place with the starters in the slot position. The offense had some drops in the 7 on 7 session (by Jackson, Marshawn Lynch and Michael Matthews). But the offense did better in 11 on 11 work. C.J. Spiller started it off with a good run up the middle, then Trent Edwards hit Jackson on a sharp deep out. Brian Brohm took the snaps as the No. 2 QB. Safety Jairus Byrd made a good strip of Stevie Johnson to force a fumble, which Byrd recovered.
The Bills ran two two-minute drills. Edwards moved the starters downfield, hitting Johnson and Jackson on good gainers, then hitting Johnson down the sideline for about a 30-yard gain. The drive of the second-stringers stalled. John McCargo got big pressure up the middle to foil one play. Naaman Roosevelt caught a pass for about 14 yards over the middle to beat a blitz. That was the best of nine offensive plays by the "twos."
Rookie David Nelson returned to practice after missing time last week with a sore hamstring. Also sitting out were Marcus Easley, Kawika Mitchell, Ed Wang, Danny Batten, Spencer Johnson and Marcus Stroud. Paul Posluszny returned to pads and worked on a limited basis for the first time. He had minor groin surgery before camp began. With Poz and Mitchell both out, Arthur Moats teamed with Andra Davis at inside linebacker. Alex Carrington got snaps at DE with the ones.

Kirk Chambers with the ones at RT? I'm really hoping Kyle Calloway steps it up, as I was seeing him as our 4th OT/4th OG. At first I wrote his lack of reps with the 1st and 2nd teams as Gailey breaking in the young guys (Carrington was originally with the 3rd team, Moats too). But with all the injuries and he still can't crack the 1st team...even though he's a 7th rounder, still a little disappointing with how awful Chambers is.

Starting O-line unlikely Friday (http://blogs.buffalobills.com/2010/08/10/starting-o-line-unlikely-friday/)

By Chris Brown - Posted August 10, 2010 – 11:26 am
Bills head coach Chan Gailey indicated that having the starting five lined up for Friday night’s preseason opener in Washington may not be in the cards.
“I doubt in this game that we’ll have all five offensive linemen out there,” said Gailey. ”You’re trying to create continuity. You’re trying to create focus. You’re trying to create a sense of oneness on that team to be able to be successful. I don’t know if you get that unless you’ve got everybody there intact throughout the whole preseason. So it’s going to be piece meal for us as I see it going into at least the first game. We’ll see after that how it goes.”
In all likelihood that means that Demetrius Bell and/or Eric Wood will not be dressed for Friday night’s game against the Redskins as the team has been careful in the amount of team work given to each of them in the team segments during practice. Cornell Green is also nursing a right leg injury suffered over the weekend.
We’ll likely know more specifics later in the week.

Chan’s situation period (http://blogs.buffalobills.com/2010/08/10/chans-situation-period/)

By Chris Brown - Posted August 10, 2010 – 9:05 am
For those Bills fans that have made it out to training camp to watch practice may have noticed that close to halfway through every practice session, coach Gailey pulls him entire team to the sideline and addresses them. Here’s what’s going on.
It’s called ‘situation period.’ A time when Gailey goes over some specific game situation where players might not know exactly what they can or cannot do based on the rules or some other nuance that doesn’t come up in games very often.
“Every day in camp we pick a (game) situation,” Gailey said. ”For example, we had a situation where it was 4th down and a half a yard somewhere between the 30 and the 50-yard line and for the defense it’s about not falling for the no-brainer long count, hard count from the offense. For the offense they have to understand what they have the opportunity to do, draw them offsides or make the first down.
“Other days it’s been taking a slow safety or taking a fast safety. We’ve had understanding what can happen on a blocked field goal. Different alignments from a punt team. I’m just trying to cover a situation a day where you stand there and you talk to them and get them to understand the game of football.”
Suffice to say that Bills players will know whether or not they should touch a ball in the end zone after a blocked field goal (see: Leon Lett) or some other obscure circumstance that could come up in a game.

Trent more vocal (http://blogs.buffalobills.com/2010/08/10/trent-more-vocal/)

By Chris Brown - Posted August 10, 2010 – 6:35 am
Trent Edwards looks more comfortable in his role as the starting quarterback, and his teammates are noticing.
Edwards has been more vocal with his teammates, has been more apt to approach his receivers in between series to discuss things that may have just happened or just to make sure they’re on the same page. He’s also been more encouraging of his teammates if they make a good play.
“He’s matured as the quarterback and as the quarterback you need to be a leader,” said Lee Evans. ”He’s definitely a lot more vocal this year, a lot more vocal in camp and I think it just goes to show just how much more confident he is. If he plays well then usually the offense plays well.”
“You’ve got to have a good relationship with your quarterback because he’s not going to see everything and vice versa,” said Roscoe Parrish. ”If you beat your guy on a route you’re not going to come to him and say, ‘Dang why didn’t you throw me the ball.’ You just let him know that you had your guy and when you watch film you talk about it. It’s all just about staying positive with one another.”
In years prior it may have proven more difficult for Edwards to assert himself knowing there were clear favorites in the locker room that preferred J.P. Losman as the starter or due to the fact that he wasn’t a proven QB. This year Edwards isn’t getting bogged down in all of that and has simply chosen to fill the role of leader and move forward. We’ll see how that helps to lift the offense as a whole in the coming days when the preseason begins Friday night, but the positive signs are on the rise.

Trent tops night session (http://blogs.buffalonews.com/billboard/2010/08/trent-tops-night-session.html)

Aug 9, 2010 9:41:41 PM / Comment (http://blogs.buffalonews.com/billboard/2010/08/trent-tops-night-session.html#comments)
Quarterback Trent Edwards had a strong practice Monday night, maybe his strongest of training camp, as the Bills worked for 90 minutes through mostly light rain at St. John Fisher College.
Edwards, who had a pretty good morning session, got things going with two downfield strikes to Lee Evans in 11-on-11 work. The Bills shifted to 7-on-7 red-zone work, and Edwards opened it with a strike in the back of the end zone to Stevie Johnson. Then he hit Evans on a sharp throw to the post for a score. His next throw was on the money in the back of the end zone for James Hardy but was dropped. Ryan Fitzpatrick was No. 2 and Brian Brohm No. 3 Monday night. Fitzpatrick had a TD pass to David Nelson. Edwards came back and hit Roscoe Parrish in a very tiny window for a score in the back of the end zone. Levi Brown followed at quarterback, and threw a pass that was deflected by Drayton Florence and picked off by linebacker Chris Kelsay near the goal line.
The practice shifted to 11-on-11 work. Marshawn Lynch opened it with a good gainer on a sweep around right tackle. Edwards hit Parrish on a quick timing route. C.J. Spiller had a good gainer off left tackle. Then Edwards hung in the pocket and beat the blitz on a fine throw over the middle for Evans. Left tackle Jamon Meredith had a good block to allow Edwards to step up. Chad Jackson, who continues to make his presence known, caught two straight balls from Fitzpatrick. Then Edwards rolled out and went deep for Jackson. Leodis McKelvin had good coverage and broke up the pass down the sideline. It was a debatable decision to wing it, but it was good to see Edwards go for it. On the next play, against another blitz, Edwards' pass for David Nelson was picked off and returned for a score by Ellis Lankster, who has to be one of the best No. 6 corners in the NFL. Nelson slipped on the play to allow for the pickoff -- at least that's the way it was viewed from this reporter's angle.
Coach Chan Gailey's assessment after practice: "Some good, some bad. It’s a work in progress, for lack of a better term. But there were some good things. I thought we were sharp in some areas and not so sharp in some other areas. Protection is going to be one of the keys for us. We’ve got to protect. We’ve got some receivers, I think, that can make some things happen."
On the injury front, Felton Huggins suffered a shoulder injury in the morning that looks significant. Rookie receiver Marcus Easley, out with what may be a knee problem, was getting a second opinion, Gailey said, without specifying the ailment. Fullback Corey McIntyre suffered a minor leg injury in the morning.
Demetrius Bell was back on the field for the night workout, as was Kawika Mitchell and Parrish.

“He’s matured as the quarterback and as the quarterback you need to be a leader,” said Lee Evans. ”He’s definitely a lot more vocal this year, a lot more vocal in camp and I think it just goes to show just how much more confident he is. If he plays well then usually the offense plays well.”

This is a good sign.
Unfortunately, there's no way to know what shape Trent is in until the real season.

Practice Notes - Day 12

Brown went 6-9 passing on the drive including a pair of third down conversions. He also had a called scramble that set up 1st-and-goal.

“He’s very comfortable away from center,” said Gailey of Brown. “That’s what he did at Troy and I think he feels good in the gun.”

The Bills had their first walk-thru practice of camp this morning at St. John Fisher. Head coach Chan Gailey is gearing down on the level of contact in practice as the first preseason game fast approaches.
This is the typical approach for NFL coaches, so as to let the players’ bodies be as fresh as possible for the longer sustained contact of a game.
Only LB Ryan Manalac was absent this morning.

Bills TE Derek Schouman has been out with an undisclosed injury that Chan Gailey had said had been nagging him, but the head coach said he’s very close to returning to practice.
“I think he’s going to try to go tomorrow,” said Gailey after practice Tuesday.
Gailey was seen conversing with Schouman for a few minutes early in Tuesday’s practice session. Schouman has missed the last four days of practice.

Batten was seen on the practice field Tuesday out of his sling that had been keeping his right shoulder immobilized.
“He’s getting better,” said Chan Gailey. ”We’ll see where that takes us. He won’t be ready this week, probably next week either. He’ll probably be lucky to get the last couple (of practices).”

The news was not good for Marcus Easley Tuesday. Though a final determination on his immediate future has not been decided, head coach Chan Gailey painted a grim picture for the rookie receiver’s availability.
“We’re in the process of making the final decision in the next day or so about what direction that thing is going to go,” said Gailey. ”But I would say longer rather than shorter.”
When asked if Easley’s injury could be season ending, Gailey gave the following response.
“It may be. I don’t know,” he said. ”We’ll have to wait and see. I need to get the final say so on that.”

Pads streak ends (http://blogs.buffalonews.com/billboard/2010/08/pads-streak-ends.html)

Aug 11, 2010 12:18:27 PM / Comment (http://blogs.buffalonews.com/billboard/2010/08/pads-streak-ends.html#comments)
The Bills held just a walk-through practice this morning for the first time since training camp opened on July 29 under new coach Chan Gailey. The Bills had practiced in pads for 17 straight practices, the most I can remember under a Bills coach since before Marv Levy, I think. ... The Bills have a practice scheduled for tonight, have a game coming on Friday night and have several offensive linemen banged up.
Tonight's session is open to the public (with a free ticket) and runs 7:15 to 9 p.m.
Meanwhile, the Bills waived receiver Felton Huggins, who suffered a shoulder injury on Monday. Huggins had been on the Bills' practice squad for half of 2007 and all of 2008 and 2009. He was in Jacksonville's camp in 2006. So he has done a good job of hanging around the roster in the NFL. However, while he continued to show consistent hands in training camp, he was a long, long-shot to make the squad this season.

Brown, Jackson, TD (http://blogs.buffalonews.com/billboard/2010/08/brown-jackson-td.html)

Aug 10, 2010 7:21:24 PM / Comment (http://blogs.buffalonews.com/billboard/2010/08/brown-jackson-td.html#comments)
Rookie quarterback Levi Brown got to run a two-minute drill for the first time this training camp, and he produced a touchdown, hitting receiver Chad Jackson on a 15-yard strike in the end zone with about 8 seconds left.
Jackson's grab was the catch of the day Tuesday at St. John Fisher College. The former second-round pick of the New England Patriots reached behind him and picked the ball out of the air with his right hand, behind defensive back Dominique Harris.
“Great catch," Brown said. “I told him he made me look good. It was a terrible throw. But he caught it so I’ll take it."
Brown had six completions and a 15-yard scramble on the march, which began at his own 35. Short throws to Chad Simpson and Donald Jones produced third-down conversions.
“He’s very comfortable away from center," coach Chan Gailey said. “That’s what he did at Troy. I think he feels good in the (shot) gun."
Jackson has had a strong first two weeks of training camp. He's seeing time in the slot with the starters and time in the slot and outside with the second team.
The Bills’ offense held its own in Tuesday’s session, following up on a pretty good showing Monday night. Trent Edwards opened the 7-on-7 red-zone session with a sharp completion to Roscoe Parrish near the goal line. Edwards was 5 of 6 to start the session. He had a 12-yard TD strike over the middle to rookie David Nelson and a pinpoint pass to tight end Shawn Nelson for a score.
The defense stopped the offense on 3 of 4 live goal-line plays. Brohm hit Stevie Johnson for a score on the last play. John McCargo had a tackle for loss during the run-fits portion of practice. In 11 on 11 work, the offense picked up the blitz to allow Edwards to hit Lee Evans ov er the middle for a good gain. Dwan Edwards, who looks stout, stuffed C.J. Spiller. Edwards also smelled out a screen pass later on. ... Bryan Scott beat a block to stymie a screen pass. Spiller looked good on a run around end out of the shotgun. ... Brian Brohm hit Roscoe Parrish on a good pass over the middle. Parrish is having a pretty good camp.

Starters to play "more" (http://blogs.buffalonews.com/billboard/2010/08/starters-to-play-more.html)

Aug 10, 2010 7:11:57 PM / Comment (http://blogs.buffalonews.com/billboard/2010/08/starters-to-play-more.html#comments)
Starters on many NFL teams play only a series in the first preseason game of the summer. That was the case for the Bills during the Dick Jauron era. Coach Chan Gailey suggest the Bills' first teamers would see a bit more work in the preseason opener on Friday against the Washington Redskins.
Said Gailey: "I told our team today to anticipate if you’re a starter that you would play maybe a little bit longer than you would have in a normal situation because we’re learning new schemes. We have a new defense, new offense, new special teams. You might have to go a little bit longer so we can get a feel for each other."

Injury update (http://blogs.buffalonews.com/billboard/2010/08/injury-update.html)

Aug 10, 2010 7:09:37 PM / Comment (http://blogs.buffalonews.com/billboard/2010/08/injury-update.html#comments)
Coach Chan Gailey indicated after Tuesday's practice the injury to rookie receiver Marcus Easley is significant. Easley's believed to have an injury to his left leg. Gailey said he's waiting for the final determination from team doctors but said Easley would be out "longer rather than shorter."
Meanwhile, rookie linebacker Danny Batten, who hurt his shoulder in the first week of camp, was out of his sling. Gailey said he's improving and said he might be able to play for the third preseason game. Linebacker Keith Ellison, who had a minor procedure on a knee in the spring, is back practicing fully. Tight end Derek Schouman may be back practicing on Wednesday. Gailey said he was waiting to get a report on the shoulder injury to receiver Felton Huggins.
Left tackle Demetrius Bell took a snap during the one-on-one pass-rushing drills vs. the defensive line on Tuesday. That was the first time this camp he's done it, a good sign. Also sitting out were Spencer Johnson, Jon Corto, Ed Wang and Andre Ramsey.

’09 preseason a lesson learned? (http://blogs.buffalobills.com/2010/08/12/09-preseason-a-lesson-learned/)

By Chris Brown - Posted August 12, 2010 – 10:20 am
Bills QB Trent Edwards is hoping that the struggles in the 2009 preseason for the offense is a lesson learned for those players that experienced it.
For those that don’t remember the Bills first team offense did not have a possession that resulted in an offensive touchdown for their entire five game preseason. After that humbling experience, Edwards wants them to get off to a much better start under Chan Gailey Friday night.
“I feel like last year’s preseason was horrible. I’d say that right now, that we didn’t do what we needed to do. We weren’t in rhythm,” said Edwards. “I think last year we weren’t expecting what we went through and that’s in the past. I think some guys that are here from last year have learned from that and don’t want to go through what we went through and a lot of that had to do with turning the ball over and not converting on third downs. So we’ve got to be good at that and we’ve got to protect the football. We’ve got to learn from our mistakes and just execute soundly.”
A handful of other players that experienced the lack of success last year echoed Edwards’ sentiments. Hopefully the offense can show signs of life despite the fact that they’ll be without three starters on the offensive line.

By Chris Brown - Posted August 12, 2010 – 9:44 am
Based on what was witnessed in the team’s Wednesday night practice, there’s a strong likelihood that Ryan Fitzpatrick will be the next quarterback on the field Friday after Trent Edwards’ night is over.
Fitz was the only other quarterback besides Edwards to take reps in the shortened Wednesday night practice session, giving strong indication that he’ll be the backup in the Redskins game. It’s certainly possible that Brohm will be the backup in the next preseason game in Toronto against Indy, since he and Fitzpatrick have split reps with the second unit pretty much down the middle for the majority of camp.
We’ll try to get it confirmed that Fitz is the backup prior to kickoff Friday night.

With Marcus Easley undergoing surgery (http://blogs.buffalobills.com/2010/08/11/easley-will-need-surgery/) sometime soon and James Hardy on the shelf for a week to 10 days (http://blogs.buffalobills.com/2010/08/11/hardy-out-7-10-days/), Buffalo will be down to seven receivers for the Friday night preseason contest. Beyond that Gailey said they’ll wait and see if they need to add numbers at the position.
“I don’t know. We’ll have to see. We have a short week next week so it’s not like we can go out and do a ton between the next two ballgames,” Gailey said. ”We’ll make a decision probably during the week next week whether we need to address that for the long term or not.”
Usually coaches like to have enough legs in camp to run routes so as not to overwork their starters, which can make them more susceptible to injury. But Gailey and his staff will have some time next week to weigh their options with a short week before the next preseason game in Toronto the following Thursday.

WR James Hardy is not participating in tonight’s practice.
He appeared to tweak something late in Tuesday afternoon’s practice on his last reception in two minute drill and was tended to briefly by trainers.
Chan Gailey didn’t believe it was anything significant, but it’s apparently enough to keep him out of tonight’s practice and could affect his ability to play Friday night.
Bad timing for the third-year wideout trying to make a climb up the depth chart. We hope to get an update from Gailey after practice.

O-line depleted for Friday (http://blogs.buffalonews.com/billboard/2010/08/oline-depleted-for-friday.html)

Aug 11, 2010 9:31:09 PM / Comment (http://blogs.buffalonews.com/billboard/2010/08/oline-depleted-for-friday.html#comments)
Coach Chan Gailey confirmed that three starters on the offensive line will not play in Friday's game against the Washington Redskins. Left tackle Demetrius Bell, right guard Eric Wood and right tackle Cornell Green all will sit out the game. Bell and Wood both participated in Wednesday night's practice, but it very likely was the doctors' and trainers' plan all along to hold both of those players out of the first exhibition. Green has been out with an injury that is not serious the past several days.
The starting offensive line Wednesday night was left tackle Jamon Meredith, left guard Andy Levitre, center Geoff Hangartner, right guard Cordaro Howard and right tackle Kirk Chambers.
Ryan Fitzpatrick took the snaps as the No. 2 quarterback. Expect him to see a good amount of time against the Redskins.
The Bills worked in pads Wednesday night, but there was a good amount of walk-through periods in the 80-minute workout. In 11-on-11 red zone work from the 30 yard line with 30 seconds on the clock, Trent Edwards got the starting offense down to the 5 with three straight completions. But Lee Evans could not hang onto a slant pass and Edwards threw incomplete for Stevie Johnson in the back of the end zone as time ran out. Fitzpatrick got the second-string into the end zone in three plays. Fitz drilled a 20-yard pass over the middle to Naaman Roosevelt for a touchdown. It was an excellent throw.

Easley, Hardy out (http://blogs.buffalonews.com/billboard/2010/08/easley-hardy-out.html)

Aug 11, 2010 9:23:30 PM / Comment (http://blogs.buffalonews.com/billboard/2010/08/easley-hardy-out.html#comments)
Coach Chan Gailey confirmed that rookie receiver Marcus Easley will need surgery soon due to a leg injury. It’s believed to be a knee, which has kept him out of practice the past week. Easley is a fourth-round draft choice out of Connecticut.
“It looks like he’s going to need surgery,” Gailey said. “I don’t know exactly when that’s going to take place. I think we’ll get a better determination on what we’re talking about, long term, short term, after that.”
Meanwhile, third-year man James Hardy is out with an injury that will keep him out of Friday’s preseason opener and most likely out of the second game next Thursday.
“Hardy’s going to be out for probably at least a week to 10 days, unless something major happens,” Gailey said. “It’s tough on him. I feel bad for him. I feel bad for us, too. We wanted to get a good look at him. He had done some good things.”
Hardy’s injury gives Stevie Johnson an even better chance to win the No. 2 receiver job. It also gives Chad Jackson and rookie David Nelson more opportunity to win playing time and make the roster. If the final cuts were today, Jackson, the former Pats second-round pick, would be on the team and seeing quality playing time. Nelson, who is 6-5, has made his presence known out of the slot in camp. The Bills have seven receivers healthy for the Redskins game. So undrafted rookies Naaman Roosevelt and Donald Jones also are going to get a good chance to make an impression.
Asked if the Bills will have to add a receiver due to injuries, Gailey said: “We’ll have to see. We’ve got a short week next week so it’s not like we can go out and do a ton in between the next two ballgames. Then we’ll make a decision probably during the week next week whether we need to address it for the long term or not.”

Practice Notes - Day 13

By Chris Brown, Lead Journalist

Head coach Chan Gailey eased off the gas pedal in the training camp setting Wednesday with the team’s preseason opener fast approaching. The Bills sideline boss put his players through a walk through in the morning followed by a shortened practice in the evening in just shells and helmets as he tries to keep his players' bodies fresh for Friday night.
With almost two full weeks of camp in the books the team is ready for a change of pace.
“I think everybody in camp around this time we’re right in the middle of the grind so I think guys are feeling it a little bit,” said <nobr>Aaron Maybinhttp://www.buffalobills.com/assets/nflimg/icon-article-link.gif (http://www.buffalobills.com/team/roster/aaron-maybin/155045d6-7d6b-46bf-957b-676c5668d804/)</nobr>. “They’re going to be excited and anxious about getting out there and hitting somebody with some other colored jerseys.”
