    A couple positive observations

I'm not going to focus on the negatives. There were a lot of them. It was a bad game. You don't have to be a rocket scientist or even watch football to realize that the Bills played a pathetic game.

So instead of repeating the negatives over and over again as so many Bills fans and media members will do leading up to Thursday, I thought I would post some positive things I saw. Not that there were many.

Our running game is going to be good this year. Despite horrific pass blocking by Chambers, the interior line wasn't awful. Wood instantly makes them better. By a huge margin. Others may disagree with me, but I felt that Meredith had one hell of a night. He played a lot of snaps and, correct me if I am wrong, didn't let up a sack or QB hit. (The hits on QB that I saw and the main pressures came from the right side of the line.) I felt that the line opened up some holes and even on some plays where there was a breakdown in blocking, the running backs got free. I think if you put our healthy starters in on the line our run blocking and pass blocking gets a little better. Specifically the run blocking. Our backs are talented too. They're going to get their yards. It's sad that we'll only be able to keep 3-4 of them. Simpson and Bell looked excellent. Particularly Simpson on a few plays. I had no idea he was that fast.

Edwards threw it deep. That's a good sign. He over threw it a bit, but I felt that had Johnson put on a burst of speed to chase it down he would have scored. Had that been Evans going after it, he probably would have caught it. Evans seems to thrive at chasing down the slightly overthrown deep ball once he has separation. Ie. Losman.

Troup had some solid plays. Especially against the run. I thought he did an excellent job of strafing the line a few times taking up two blockers. He had a few busted plays, but I liked it for a first showing.

Maybin. It's kind of hard to put him down as a positive, because even though he had some good plays he has some really bad ones. His problem is that he has one rush. The speed rush. He doesn't have any counter moves. The one time he spun inside and rip moved his guy he gets a sack. He got thrown to the ground at least twice that I saw. But, there were times that he was right on the QB. He seemed to run up field a lot, but the few plays he slowed it down a bit he was right in the QBs face. I think with some coaching (and added muscle) he could contribute as a situational rusher this year. But he has yet to show he can be an every down guy. (Although there was one run play he read perfectly. He got through the line, saw it was a run. Broke down, kept his shoulders square and moved down the line for an assisted tackle. Gain of a yard on the play.)

David Nelson. He will make this team. It's going to be hard to say no to this kid. He has great size and hands, and shows some speed. I'm not just putting him down here because of the TD. There were a few catches and routes that were nice from him. Even when he didn't get the ball I was trying to watch him. I did a lot of rewinding and fast forwarding.

All in all, it wasn't pretty. The QB play was down right awful (to say the least. Edwards had a few good plays then plenty bad ones and Fitzpatrick's first few series were a clinic on how NOT to play football), our defense was disturbingly bad (Even our secondary had breakdowns), our special teams made big time errors and our linebacker depth was disappointing.

But I think once you put players like Poz, Wood, Green and Bell into the mix you'll see a little better pass protection (if only slightly better) and Poz is much better than Mitchell or Ellison or whoever that was making some pretty big mistakes inside.

We're not going to the playoffs this year, but I don't think this game was a 100% indication of how the season will turn out.

We've got a lot of work to do though.

    Re: A couple positive observations

No surprises from Maybin. I happen to be a pretty fast runner, why cant I do the exact same thing Maybin does and get paid millions for it?

With his speed and height you want to see that he can cover in the open field and get free from blocks. I don't think we saw that tonight, nor have we ever. I will be fair and say that when he does get a rare tackle, he seems to wrap up well.

A 3-4 will always have a hard time holding up against the run when it is spread with two tight ends, and sometimes two running backs, but our starters did get pushed off the line an unacceptable amount on a few plays. Stroud is less powerful than last year.

I agree that Nelson looked faster than I expected. He seems to have football speed.

Spiller looked like we expected. Chad Simpson, a player in a similar role, also looked good.

I am just not that unhappy with this effort tonight. This was a welcome to the NFL moment for a lot of guys. We will get better.

Maybin takes himself out of every play because he has 1 pass rush move. Try to run around the corner...Too bad all it takes is a shove to move him 10 miles away from the QB.

The guy is a bust period. No matter how hard he works or how dedicated he is, he just isn't going to cut it. The film doesn't lie and he can't make plays. He sure as hell can't stop the run. His game is predictable and lacking.

Good thing we took him over Oher....NOT!

I got only one positive out of the game and it's the fact that our running game is going to be good. Really good. Even with backup scrubs we were averaging a least 4 yards a carry no matter who ran the ball.

Except that they have a proven QB, a super bowl winning coach, and a top 5 draft pick LT..

I love our running game man. I also think Spiller is going to be great. He had some trouble running between the tackles tonight, but I think Wood in there will help a lot. Not to mention Green or Meredith > Chambers. How is Chambers still on this team??? Honestly, he needs to get cut. Meredith by far and away out played him.

Chambers blows and I'm sick of seeing his scrub ass suiting up for my team.

                  Re: A couple positive observations

BW, thank you for this post.

I think there were a few positives...I mean we ****ing scored a TD, right?

To bag the season is a little premature, but I know, I know "With the **** sandwich this team has fed us for a decade, we deserve to be miserable *****s."

I was actually encouraged by Maybin's hustle. The secondary let me down, but what happens now, or at least what I imagine is happening, is that they are going to watch film, and make some changes.

Chan was obviously not pleased...how could he be? I know that his accent makes him seem stupid, but the dude knows football. We will make adjustments, we'll get some players back, and we'll see what we are working with.

One positive is Bell, a tip of the cap to Draft Boy. The dude is a talent, and we should keep him. Simpson looked decent, and hopefully he makes it to the PS.

Beast Mode is a Beast again. He looks to have the quickness back that he was missing last year. I hope Jackson isn't too bad, because he is our leader right now.

QB play was bad, but to tell you the truth, TE looked better than last year. The pick was bad, but last year he gets creamed...so on Monday, we tell him to throw that away. Evans didn't come back for the ball, but he probably didn't expect a roll out and a throw!!

I am not of the "We should have taken Clausen" persuasion, but I will say that everybody that slams some of the journeymen should have taken not of Grossman. He was very comfortable and played great for the 'Skins. He is a guy that if you would have mentioned him, everybody would have flamed away, but he looked good. As bad as our D was, I will admit that their offense was efficient, and prepared.

I wonder what percentage of TE's incompletions were connected to poor route running? Maybe none, but either way, it's worth considering.

Meredith did look good, and will probably take Green's spot. It would be nice if somebody could supplant Hangartner and make the interior a brick ****ing wall.

Reggie Corner, you broke my heart. You looked like you'd never played D before...of course most of the secondary looked bad, but they are the strong part of the defense, aren't they?

I know people dislike POZ, but he makes a difference....a big difference. I thought Davis and Edwards looked like the real deal, and I always like Kyle Williams, I don't care how short his arms are.

How about my man McCargo? I say that completely with tongue in cheek...but he did appear to give a ****, which is an upgrade over the past.

Overall there were things to build on here, and several more to work on, with a few requiring a trip back to the drawing board. If we look anywhere near this bad against the Phins, I will be shocked. It's almost like there is some reason for there being a preseason...other than some wild money-making conspiracy theory...

Oh, and Fitzpatrick looks like the real deal at QB...only one problem...he can't throw the football. Other than that he looks great!

He must have pictures of somebody. The guy is like a bad penny...

I usually don't agree when some keyboard warrior slams an NFL player and a no talent hack, or a 22 year old bust that stands no chance of learning or adapting, but I agree on Chambers....there is no question where I would create the first opening on this roster.

We, realistically, could still sign some journeyman for depth, or an UDFA, or just suit up the midget trainer and be farther ahead that we are with Chambers. I remember when he got cut last year, and I was happy. i hate to admit it, because I don't like to see anybody lose their job, but seriously, how did he even get on an NFL team?

There's no reason to hold out hope for Maybin. He was a one dimensional player in college and that one dimension gets destroyed in the NFL. Versatility is king in the NFL. Backup scrub tackles across the entire league can stop maybin's predictable ass move. He's undersized.

He's a pass rush specialist who can't pass rush.

Buffalo had more offense than they had all of last preseason.

Their coach didn't mince words in his condemnation of their poor play overall. Last year we would have heard, "They really played hard. Things just didn't go our way."
