Things I Hope to See

Trent Edwards taking strides

After a promising drive to start the first preseason game, Trent reverted back to his old self and looked indecisive and unconfident. If he's going to grab ahold of the starting QB job, he's going to need to show some consistency, take a few shots, and show some sort of presence in the pocket.

CJ Spiller staying healthy

Who thinks taking a running-back early was stupid now? You never can have too many talented players at one position - if you're the Bills, at least. I'll be watching CJ especially close on runs between the tackles against a team that was not very good against the run last year. That being said, I'll take a 0 yard performance from the rook if it means that he's injury-free through the game.

George Wilson covering for Byrd

The Bills have been a huge pain in the groin the last decade or so, but now one of their best defensive players seems to be suffering from a chronic injury to said region. Luckily, the Bills are deep in the secondary and have an accomplished FS backing up last year's DROY runner-up.

Demetrius Bell looking spry

Jamon Meredith did, by all accounts, an admirable job in the first preseason game as the starting LT. Hopefully Bell can take the next step in his recovery and look competent at game-speed. Not only would that allow Meredith to focus his efforts on the RT position, but it helps sure up an offensive line that lacks in talent and depth.

Let's go Buffalo!

In fact the last time the Bills first string offense scored a touchdown in a preseason game was the last time they played the Colts on Aug. 24, 2008

And that was JP at QB for Edwards, who was injured.

With starting FS Jairus Byrd out for tonight’s game following a procedure on his groin, a familiar face will be stepping for him.

Buffalobills.com has learned that George Wilson will start at free safety in place of Byrd tonight against the Colts in Buffalo’s second preseason game.

Wilson is all too familiar with the role as he stepped in for injured starters at the safety position last year making 12 starts in 2009 when he posted a career high in tackles (91) and interceptions (4).

Wilson has been awesome depth for the bills. Hope he does well in the new scheme.

Spiller’s true role to stay under wraps (http://blogs.buffalobills.com/2010/08/19/spillers-true-role-to-stay-under-wraps/)

By Chris Brown - Posted August 19, 2010 – 9:22 am
C.J. Spiller will get the lion’s share of the work with the first unit in tonight’s preseason game with Indianapolis, but what you see from him tonight is not going to be anything close to how he’ll be used in the regular season.
Head coach Chan Gailey admitted as much as he plans to have Spiller execute a lot of the offense’s basic one back run plays. Here was his response when asked if Spiller will be used in the many different ways it’s anticipated he’ll be utilized come the regular season.
“Not really,” said Gailey. ”I think he’s going to get a lot of good reps that he needs to get because he missed I think nine practices in training camp. He’s going to get some good reps, but there will be a lot more diversity from him as time goes on in his offense.”
Gailey showed his sense of humor when he was asked if he would label Spiller a hybrid (type player).
“Somebody else did that not me,” he said. ”I don’t know what that is, but it’s a car isn’t it? I think that he’s going to be used in multiple ways, if that’s what that is then yeah he’ll be used in a lot of ways.”
Those multiple ways just won’t be on display for the likes of Buffalo’s opponents to view on film just yet. With the Bills slated to play all three division opponents in the first month of the season, keeping their true plans for Spiller under wraps makes sense.

Play list for 1st offense will expand (http://blogs.buffalobills.com/2010/08/19/play-list-for-1st-offense-will-expand/)

By Chris Brown - Posted August 19, 2010 – 1:55 pm
Even though Chan Gailey is expected to play things close to the vest in tonight’s preseason game so as not to tip off regular season opponents about their plans for the offense, Buffalo’s starters will still run a majority of plays out of their base offense, but there will be some changes from the first preseason game.
“We’ll incorporate new things,” Gailey said. ”It’ll be I won’t say a lot different, but different from last week’s game plan. You’re trying to work on every different phase of your offense. This is phase two of where we are.”
Gailey and his offensive staff had planned to make use of a lot of their base plays with a split backfield between Fred Jackson and Marshawn Lynch in the first preseason game, but that was nixed when both backs were injured on the team’s opening possession against Washington. More one back plays are expected from the first team offense tonight.

<!-- .post --> Trent on the QB competition (http://blogs.buffalobills.com/2010/08/19/trent-on-the-qb-competition/)

By Chris Brown - Posted August 19, 2010 – 1:23 pm
Trent Edwards has heard his head coach address the media. He knows nothing is set in concrete with respect to the starting QB job. That’s why he’s taking the following approach to help ensure he’s still atop the depth chart when the preseason has concluded.
“I need to grow and continue to compete out there,” he said. ”Chan (Gailey) wants to see a guy taking control of the quarterback position, being assertive and being yourself out there and enjoying the position. So, I’ve got to make sure I’m competing and that’s something that I enjoy doing. Come week one, hopefully I’m the starter.”
Edwards realizes he has to lift the collective play of the offense with a few plays of his own. Hopefully he can make some of the same deep ball completions that he has in the camp practice setting with the likes of Lee Evans and Roscoe Parrish and get the offense rolling.

You do realize that Curtis Painter will be playing against the Buffalo Bills reserve defense right? The same defense that Rex Grossman smoked last week. Grossman looked like a pro bowl QB last week.... i'm sure Painter will be just fine tonight.

Man, I'm watching and this team looks decent. Although I'd like to see a bit more pass rush if the Colts are truly missing 4 of their starting OL. Were we in nickel or dime the entire time on defense that one drive? I didn't see any blitzes, just the four man front rushing. It seems like our defense is very, very basic so far.

I agree, and there's one thing about this game that has really surprised me: using Spiller in multiple ways. I thought Gailey had said before the game that they wouldn't show our future opponents how we plan to use Spiller. Well, we split him out wide, ran him inside and out, used him on a fake, a draw play, and a screen play. Obviously those are fairly standard ways to use a guy like him, but that's quite a bit of variety considering Gailey's comments. I'm liking how the offense is working...and we've scored 24 points despite several poor drives.

nothing wrong with a checkdown to avoid being killed. Frigging bills fans. Never understood the theory vs Trent and also with now Brohm. It is the brutal OL

That's all I'm saying, that he looked no different than Trent.
I don't mean that in a good way ... he has to throw longer than 10 yards to be impressive.

How is that any different than *snap* *throw* *let the receiver make a play*?

Dude Jackson would have had to catch that ball while hugging the defender and catching it behind his back. Chad Jackson isn't Randy Moss bro. Gotta make a better throw for 6 there.

It's really that hard to reach around a guy and catch it? You don't have to be Randy Moss to do that. It's a legitimate play, and I can pretty much guarantee it wasn't supposed to be a fade.

You can argue about whether or not Jackson should be able to catch it, but if it's not a fade, then it's not a lazy throw by Brohm. And since Jackson wasn't looking for an over-the-shoulder pass, I have to believe it wasn't supposed to be a fade.

Lol? So any throw that isn't 100% on the money is a lazy throw? Then I guess every QB makes lazy throws every game.

For a guy who has "continual accuracy" issues, 78.6% completions on 11/14 passing for 100 yards (7.1 YPA) isn't too bad.

That delay of game was bad, though. That kind of thing should come with more playing experience.

Big plays carry Bills to win over Colts

After a lackluster performance in the preseason opener, Buffalo’s first string offense bounced back in impressive fashion as they made use of some of their top playmakers to put up 14 points on the board early. The defense chipped in with four takeaways and a touchdown of their own en route to a 34-21 victory over Indianapolis.
“I think we made a step this week,” said head coach Chan Gailey. “What I told our team was you have to keep making steps forward and I thought we made a step forward in this ball game. Hopefully you can do that all the time. But when you get more turnovers and don’t turn the ball over, and you get one of those returned for a touchdown you win most of the time.”
Following a short opening possession by the Colts in which they went three-and-out, Buffalo’s offense struck quickly. <nobr>Trent Edwardshttp://www.buffalobills.com/assets/nflimg/icon-article-link.gif (http://www.buffalobills.com/team/roster/trent-edwards/26db3ddb-7753-4604-ac7f-eb78856a889a/)</nobr> hit <nobr>Roscoe Parrishhttp://www.buffalobills.com/assets/nflimg/icon-article-link.gif (http://www.buffalobills.com/team/roster/roscoe-parrish/0962e2fa-bdb3-4358-9065-857fbdeace9d/)</nobr> along the far sideline for an 11-yard gain for a first down. Parrish then followed up with a six-yard pickup on a reverse.
<nobr>C.J. Spillerhttp://www.buffalobills.com/assets/nflimg/icon-article-link.gif (http://www.buffalobills.com/team/roster/cj-spiller/57e42512-c2ee-4ca7-8400-f1d85b3dbfcd/)</nobr>, starting in place of the injured <nobr>Fred Jacksonhttp://www.buffalobills.com/assets/nflimg/icon-article-link.gif (http://www.buffalobills.com/team/roster/fred-jackson/9197889b-672f-42fb-ba04-3b75b8afb81a/)</nobr> and <nobr>Marshawn Lynchhttp://www.buffalobills.com/assets/nflimg/icon-article-link.gif (http://www.buffalobills.com/team/roster/marshawn-lynch/85ff28be-651a-40ed-be0d-b6595fff1df6/)</nobr>, converted a 2nd-and-4 with a four-yard carry to move the chains again. On the next play from scrimmage, Spiller showed his elusiveness and power as he broke three tackles to rip off a 31-yard touchdown run giving the Bills an early 7-0 lead.
“The offensive line did a great job blocking up front. Coming in we knew how they were going to play, how we knew they were a fast defense and how they were going to probably overrun a couple of our plays,” said Spiller. “I just read my keys and Corey (McIntyre) did a great job. I just cut back, made a guy miss and it felt good to get in there.”

So I guess Trent's incredibly dumb throw to Lee on the opening drive was hobo-class lazy, if the DB was looking that was an easy pick, looked like a panic throw as well.
