The players and coaches of the Buffalo Bills can't help but feel like they are living an episode of Friday Night Lights every time they take the field during a night practice at St. John Fisher College's Growney Stadium.
"Every time we practice under the lights, it just reminds you of high school," Bills inside linebacker Kawika Mitchell said after the team's final night practice of training camp Sunday. "It adds a little bit more fun. It's always good to have the fans out here cheering loud. It's a good time and it takes the edge off a little bit."Unlike the fictional team, the injuries felt by the Bills are clearly real and they keep on mounting. Gailey announced after practice that Marcus Easley and Danny Batten had been placed on the injured reserve list.
Gailey said the rookies were going to miss too much of the regular season to carry them on the roster. Easley, a wide receiverhttp://images.intellitxt.com/ast/adTypes/mag-glass_10x10.gif (http://www.democratandchronicle.com/article/20100823/SPORTS03/8230308/1021/Practice-under-lights-fires-up-Buffalo-Bills#) from the University of Connecticut, has been out since Aug. 2 with a left knee injury. Batten, a sixth-round pick out of South Dakota State, hurt his left shoulder on Aug. 1.
The tight endhttp://images.intellitxt.com/ast/adTypes/mag-glass_10x10.gif (http://www.democratandchronicle.com/article/20100823/SPORTS03/8230308/1021/Practice-under-lights-fires-up-Buffalo-Bills#) position seems dangerously thin after Michael Matthews suffered an apparent left ankle or foot injury in Sunday's practice. Gailey had no update on Matthews' status.
With the injuries at tight end, Gailey said the team was forced to alter some offensive looks.
