View Full Version : The Mallett/Luck watch, Sat. 3:30

Just in case anybody was curious, both of these QB's are playing tommorow. I'm more interested in watching Ryan Mallett play, as he takes on the defending National Champs, and number 1 team in America, Alabama(CBS). Both games start at 3:30. Andrew Luck is taking on Notre Dame(NBC). Should be fun to watch.

I've never, ever been a follower of College football. But these two QB's right here are actually making football season fun for me. I'm praying one of these guys are in a Bills uni next year.

If Mallet plays great against Alabama then he should be the 1st pick in the draft.

Personally, I want to see a body of work not single performances. Also, Im not as concerned with whether the team wins or not as I am with individual play. The two could be related, but not always.

What I want to see Mallett do is continue to make smart reads, go through progressions, and show pocket presence and poise... look like a field general, not just a guy who will throw it up for grabs. He's been noticeably better this year so far, this is a game where he will get pressured, lets see how he handles it.

CBS doesn't exist over here, which is why I am looking for a feed. ESPN America is showing it, but as I said my in-laws don't get that.

As long as they're not blocking European IP addresses you can catch it on cbssports.com. High quality feed is available as well if you have neough bandwidth.

Mallett running the offense well and not folding under pressure situations is what I want to see. I want to see how he does taking on the #1 team in the country (if that will affect his play) and how he controls his team in doing so. That would tell me a lot more about the kind of player his and intends to be.

It was beautiful. The first play especially when he fielded the high snap and still completed the pass.

I dont agree in that Mallett is actually very mobile compared to Bledsoe who is very not.

I believe they called a false start on the offense. But yeah, he let the clock run down too much to get anything off.

Got no sound on as I'm watching the Ulster v Connaught rugby match on the TV, so I just assumed delay of game.

The character stuff came from him acting like a freshman at college at Michigan.

ND is keeping him in check.... by keeping him off the field. When he's on the field, it's not pretty for the Irish.

Absolute beauty on that PA by Mallett, faked out the camera man.

Followed by another great deep throw, WR hurt on the play.

Yeah, glad that Childs was able to get up and hobble away for treatment, for a while I thought he was badly hurt.

That second deep throw by Mallet just now, was a thing of beauty. Perfectly placed, left his arm with ease.

I still think Luck is the better QB, but if by some craziness we play ourselves out of Luck, Mallet is there... Just saying.

Terrible decision on that Int, just throw it away.

Well that wasn't exactly bright from Mallet. Just didn't read the coverage and threw it straight to the defender.

OpIv37

Luck is moving the ball against ND again.

I will say this, though: Stanford uses a lot of multiple TE sets. Luck's targets are HUGE and not necessarily slow, but certainly slower than average WR's. If he ends up on the Bills next year, it's going to be much different trying to find Parrish and Evans.

I'm falling in love with Ryan Mallett. They just showed him on a replay taking his OL aside and dragging them into the huddle, while they were busy cheering with the fans.... That's leadership right there.

kingJofNYC
09-25-2010, 04:08 PM
Luck isn't even close, from a physical/tools standpoint, to Mallett. A lot of his throws sail, not enough juice. That pass on the int was piss poor, so much air underneath the ball.

OpIv37
09-25-2010, 04:10 PM
Luck had ND CB Robert Blanton in single coverage 3 times in the last 2 drives- Blanton made the play every time and tipped the ball for an INT by a teammate on the last drive.

Luck keeps trying to pick on Blanton with no luck so far (pun intended).

I'm sorry as a ND fan, Alabama is far better than ND and Mallett looks great. Luck looks good but not special. You can't teach arm strength, size. He can just put the ball in spots not many can.

P.S. Richardson is a Beast

Yeah, but celebrating when you score is fine. Celebrating when you get to the one yard line is premature jockulation.

Agreed. I was impressed with him grabbing the linemen and yelling at them to quit it and come to the huddle. This is something Jim Kelly would have done, get in your face if u **** up. I've been wanting a QB to do that for a while.

Luck with his 2nd INT.

Both were on tipped balls, but they weren't tipped at the LOS. They were tipped by guys in coverage because Luck chose to throw into said coverage. 1/2 way through the 2nd and Stanford has 1 offensive TD and 4 FG's.

Luck is definitely good but he doesn't strike me as anything spectacular (based solely on this game).

Buddy Nix wants neither.

But Ralph writes the checks so those might be the only two choices he has.

Im not as down on Mallett after this as many of you are. Luck threw 2 INTs today against a much much lesser team.

I plan to scout this game and didnt get to catch the last quarter as much as I would like.

But, my initial assessment is this, Mallett didn't do anything to be worthy of the #1 pick... but Luck didn't either. And yet Luck STILL probably will be, and Mallett could STILL easily go in the top 15.

And both could easily have very good careers in the NFL.

Mallett showed an ability to sense pressure on a handful of plays, which is nice. However, if you want a QB who can finish a big game on his home field, the interception at the end that eventually lost the game doesn't give you a warm fuzzy.
I didn't see Luck this week.

Won't matter. Gailey will draft a WR. Or a CB. Who knows.
