Dolphins offense 101: Quarterback Griese to test skills today

Before there is any real talk of a quarterback controversy, Brian Griese must master an important task -- learning the Dolphins' offense.

Today, Griese will be immersed in the team's attack plan when he participates in the final Dolphins offseason minicamp, which runs through Wednesday.

But the immersion program lasts only so long. Players still have two weeks of workouts before the NFL offseason program ceases under rules of the collective bargaining agreement. There will be no full-squad workouts until training camp opens July 25. Plus, most of Miami's coaching staff will be out of town.

Don't hit your brother... unless you're trying to make the Dolphins

DAVIE -- There will come a time in training camp next month when Obafemi Ayanbadejo will have to lower his shoulder pads and hit his younger brother, Brendon, with all his might.

And there will come a time when Brendon will need to do the same to his brother, especially in the ultra-rough middle drill, where linebackers and fullbacks often collide.

"I might not even see him," said Obafemi, a fullback. "Eventually I know it will happen, but it'll be over in 1.1 seconds and that will be that. I'm not even worried about that. I'll see a green jersey and do what I've got to do."

Griese glad he’s no longer the fall guy

DAVIE -- Yes, he still has the dog. No, he doesn't want to talk about him.

"He doesn't need any more press," Brian Griese said with a laugh.

Griese can joke about it now because he's a reserve quarterback for the Dolphins, not the successor to John Elway for the Denver Broncos. But when Griese tripped over his golden retriever last September and sprained his ankle, it wasn't funny to some who had become fed up with the quarterback.

It was, in a way, a summation of the things that went wrong for Griese in five years with the Broncos.

Fiedler starts, but Fins' Griese II Era begins

          Associated Press

DAVIE, Fla. -- Jay Fiedler expects Miami fans to think that he and Brian Griese are rivals, each seeking to emerge as the leader of a team with Super Bowl aspirations.

So shortly after Griese signed a two-year deal with the Dolphins last week, Fiedler called his newest teammate and invited him to his home for some barbecue.

"We just got to know each other and bonded a little bit,'' Fiedler said. "I expect us to become pretty good friends around here. It was just two teammates getting together, getting to know each other."

Griese's process of getting to know the rest of the Dolphins began in earnest Monday, when Miami opened a three-day quarterback camp. It's the fourth and final series of workouts for Miami before training camp opens July 25.

The two alternated often during the full-team workouts, each taking about half the snaps with the veterans. Griese remained on the field for another 30 minutes, getting in extra work with the rookies.

"It felt good to be back out and playing with the guys,'' Griese said. "It was kind of like recess for me, getting a chance to get out on the field and have some fun again."

Coach Dave Wannstedt, who has repeatedly confirmed that Fiedler is the starter for this season, said he liked what he saw from Griese, who spent his first five NFL seasons with Denver.

Griese gets first work as a Dolphin

Quarterback Brian Griese's first throw in team drills with the Dolphins on Monday ended about as awkwardly as someone trying to enunciate on the first day of a foreign language class.

Through a combination of rookie wide receiver J.R. Tolver falling and a hanging throw, Griese's unofficial attempt with the Dolphins was picked off by cornerback Jamar Fletcher. It was an unimpressive start to a decidedly mediocre day for both Griese and starter Jay Fiedler as the Dolphins opened their fourth and final quarterback school of the offseason. Training camp opens July 25.

Dolphins sign draft pick Lee as tight end

DAVIE - The Miami Dolphins on Monday signed tight end Donald Lee, the first of their two fifth-round draft choices this year -- and 156th overall -- to a four-year contract, the team announced.

Lee, 22, is the second of Miami's nine 2003 draft choices to sign, joining linebacker Corey Jenkins, the club said in a prepared release.

Griese, Fiedler convene, agree team comes first

Both Dolphins QBs rusty during practice
The most important pass Dolphins quarterback Jay Fiedler has made recently might have been when Brian Griese asked for the barbecue sauce last week at Fiedler's house.

On Monday, Fiedler and Griese debuted in what figures to be an ongoing melodrama for media and fans regarding the Dolphins quarterback job. Miami opened its fourth and final quarterback school of the offseason to a healthy media contingent and a sprinkling of fans

                  Miami optimistic about Gadsden

DAVIE -- Dave Wannstedt does not expect Oronde Gadsden at practice today, but the coach and associates of the free-agent wide receiver are more optimistic he will re-sign with the Dolphins soon.

Gadsden did not make the planned trip to Jacksonville to meet with the Jaguars, and on Monday the Jags signed wide receiver J.J. Stokes to a one-year deal worth $805,000, eliminating another potential employer for Gadsden.

                    Everything's peachy, for now

DAVIE -- Maybe it was Jay Fiedler's idea to invite Brian Griese to the house for some grillin' and chillin' a week or so ago, or maybe he did so at someone else's suggestion.

Fiedler was vague on the specifics shortly after he and Griese spent their first time together on a practice field Monday morning.

But it really doesn't matter who arranged what, anyway.

Gadsden is urged to sign `soon'

Vice president of football operations Rick Spielman acknowledged the Dolphins might pull their offer to Oronde Gadsden of a one-year deal for the league minimum of $530,000 if the receiver does not sign a contract ``soon.''

''That's correct,'' Spielman said. ``We want this resolved soon.''

Gadsden is faced with little other choice, particularly after his last immediate hope for a job with another team disappeared Monday. Jacksonville signed receiver J.J. Stokes after using Gadsden as a threat in talks with Stokes.

The Jaguars had contacted Gadsden on Friday about a possible visit Monday, but the visit became unnecessary after Stokes agreed to terms.

A Jaguars spokesman said that with Stokes under contract, the team was no longer interested in Gadsden.

Dolphins' Taylor among group visiting troops in Persian Gulf

DAVIE-- Jason Taylor of the Miami Dolphins is among several entertainers and celebrities visiting troops stationed in the Persian Gulf this week, as part of the USO's first large-scale entertainment tour since the war began in Iraq.

Taylor arrived in the region on Tuesday morning, sharing a 16-hour flight with entertainers like Kid Rock, Lee Ann Womack, Wayne Newton, John Stamos, Rebecca Romjin-Stamos, Alyssa Milano and Gary Sinise.

Others, including Robert De Niro, were expected later, Taylor said.

Griese learning Miami's playbook in first minicamp appearance

DAVIE -- Of all the things quarterback Brian Griese would like to forget about his time with the Denver Broncos, nothing is more important than erasing his memories of their playbook.

Since signing with the Dolphins 11 days ago, Griese has taken a crash course in trying to digest an offensive system he describes as "totally different" than what he operated in Denver for five seasons. That learning curve continued Monday when Griese participated in minicamp.

Although he started 51 games the past four years, Griese stayed on the field with rookies and reserves long after the Dolphins' first-team players were dismissed. Griese will continue to receive additional practice time as he settles into his new role as the backup for Jay Fiedler.

                            Gadsden on bubble?

Unsigned receiver's role is in doubt
As Dolphins wide receivers coach Robert Ford talks about Oronde Gadsden's hands, his voice rises with excitement.

''He still has the best hands in the NFL,'' Ford said.

But when asked about Gadsden's grip on a job with the Dolphins, Ford's voice starts to recede.

The start of training camp is more than a month away, but the Dolphins' depth chart is already coming into focus, and Gadsden is in the middle of one of the blurry battles.

Former Aggie teammates reunited in Dolphins' offensive line

DAVIE -- It's strange the reunions you might see in an NFL locker room.

You might, like Brendon and Femi Ayanbadejo, find your brother here. Or like Seth McKinney, Taylor Whitley and Billy Yates, you might find your longtime teammate from the Texas A&M offensive line.

Except unlike the Ayanbadejos, the Aggies are actually in competition with each other.

"Very unexpected, that's for sure," Whitley said.

For him, it sure was. But McKinney, the four-year starter at center for Texas A&M before joining the Dolphins last year as a third-round draft pick, had an inkling. The Dolphins asked him about Whitley, who started at right guard next to McKinney as a junior and stayed there after McKinney left.
