RAIDERS CORNERBACK EAGER TO PUT INJURIES BEHIND HIM, NEGOTIATE NEW DEAL
By Dennis Georgatos
Mercury News

The injuries that sabotaged his play last season weigh on cornerback Charles Woodson, but he hopes they don't weigh down talks with the Raiders about a new contract.

``You know, this business we're in, it's kind of cutthroat at times and you don't know what's going to happen,'' Woodson said Saturday after the club's last mini-camp before training camp begins July 25. ``Hopefully, they'll take into consideration that I gave my all to the team, and hopefully they'll think about rewarding me.''

Woodson played in the Super Bowl with a metal plate holding his cracked right fibula together and was beaten repeatedly on Tampa Bay pass plays in the Raiders' 48-21 loss.

In his first game back from a fractured right shoulder Nov. 3, Woodson had been torched by Terrell Owens for 12 catches and 191 yards in a 23-20 overtime loss to the 49ers

When it comes to contract negotiations in the NFL, it's all about timing and leverage.

Raiders cornerback Charles Woodson's leverage may never be lower at any point this year - the final season of his contract - than it is now.

So the timing is right for the Raiders to strike a new long-term deal with Woodson before his value skyrockets....
