I don't know if Byrd has totally recovered from his groin problems. Not making excuses, just wondering.

Just proving early that last season may have been a fluke? Or could it be that he's in a new system and not asked to do the same things he was asked to do in Fewells/Jaurons defense?

Teams simply don't need to throw on us that often. They are ripping off 200 yards a game on the ground and tiring out the defense.

Byrd, Whitner and the rest of the secondary will not look good till we can play decent football up front.

mahdi nailed it. teams don't have to throw it on us. and they have all day to throw. the pass rush has gotten worse. packers, pats, and jets can protect their QB against other good teams.

I'm not saying that byrd may not have some issues, but the guy has actually been a valuable part of the team, whitner has never proved to be a key piece to the puzzle. So byrd gets more leniency in my book.

I'll second this... throw in the fact that our passrush is FAR worse then last years

(last year we had 32 sacks... or 2 per game... plus some pressure, this year we have 4, or 1 per game, and frankly, i'm not sure how we got 4 sacks as there has been zero pressure)

when a QB has 5 seconds to throw and a comfortable pocket you simply won't intercept crap. they can wait until a guy gets 5 or 10 yards open, you'll never pick anything off like that.

As a side note, Byrd has our 1 and only fumble recovery, and should have had a 2nd last week but Gailey didn't challenge the ruling that he was out of bounds (he should have.. i thought it was pretty clear he had possession and an elbow down.

Actually if Byrd just dove on top of the ball instead of flailing and lunging at it with moving parts, he would have stayed in bounds. Not to mention the other 3 players that had a crack at falling on it, but it bounced around like a hot potato.

Combination of a new scheme, new assignments, and an embarassing pass rush are all big contributing factors. Keep in mind this is only Byrd's second year and in his first he had to learn a whole new position so its a lot of change for him.

and he wasn't great with the run to start with.
