    Run the ball

I'm beginning to think Chan Gailey does not have the brilliant offensive mind we've been led to believe. I know, I know, major shock. Take a deep breath and we might move on from this startling revelation.

How else would you explain his inability to get the run game going. No, let me rephrase that...how else would you explain his COMPLETE AND UTTER abandonment of the run? CJ Spiller and Fred Jackson combine for only 17 carries? What is going on? Did we draft a kick return specialist only?

It's not like Freddy and CJ were having a horrible day running. It seemed like the Jags' run defense was just as bad as the Bills. Everytime Jackson touched the ball it seemed like he was ripping off 10 yards. But for some inexplicable reason we decide that Fitz is the man with the golden arm. Did Gailey watch the freaking game? Did he see the skip pass to Parrish? Did he see the 12 yards overhead pass? I must be going crazy...or stupid.:db: Am I the only one?

      Re: Run the ball

apparently they were going to run more but the O was penalized in the redzone which eventually led to the D giving up the lead and prompted them to throw.

I'm more worried about the D. Even with a qb like Fitz and an OL like ours , at least we're scoring points. It should get better once we have a franchise qb and an better OL.

considerin we wasted a 1st round draft choice on a RB ud THINK we'd be running more but i guess gailey the genius who sucked in college and was fired by the CHIEFS! because he SUCKED at the OC position..SUPPOSEDLY has a plan hahaha..help ralph wilson run this team into the ground..hes doing a better job then dick jauron did..he will be getting an extension once we go 1-15 or 0-16..

Jackson averaged 6.1 per carry yesterday and 7.0 a week or two previously.. so WTF?? RUN!

This is where stats lie big time. Both Spiller and Jackson had very good statistical days, but 3 second half offensive drives started with Jackson losing two yards on first down. That's why we gave up on the run. It was killing our drive starts.

I wish our line was average so we could just pound the ball on the ground. That would open up our pass game so much. Luck would have 400 yards a game lol

I agree. The D is miles further from being good enough to win, than the O is. Who'd have thought we'd be saying that at this point in the season?

                  Re: Run the ball

I think what is missing from this discussion is that what works in the first half doesn't always work in the second. teams adjust, or at least teams other than the Bills. Jackson and Spiller were doing great in the first half, but by the second, the Jags adjusted and suddenly Jackson was losing yards on every carry putting us into 2nd and 12. How many 3-and-outs that start with a run play does it take before you say "Gee, maybe I should try something else??"

                    Re: Run the ball

Our defense couldn't stop anyone, you can't run the ball when you can't get off the field.

Jags receive the ball at half, go on a long drive, touchdown. We go down the field and score, tie game. They get the ball back, drive down the field and score again. Bills get the ball and are stopped. Jags get the ball back and score. Hard to keep running when you don't have a defense and you're playing catch up.

                      Re: Run the ball

Up 10-0, we should have run it down their throats, controlling the clock. We allowed them to chip away at us, and then tie it at half.

Chan seems to go to a panic mode, and abandon the run every game.

Now, I'm no head coach, but it would make sense to me to stick with your strengths. Defense is not a strength. Keep them off of the field. Passing...that is not a strength, as Fitzy has allowed his big problem from last year to carry over to this year; the guy simply has trouble throwing a football.

We have two really good backs. Run sets up PA, which helps the passing game.

I know it's a pass first league, but for ****'s sake, that's not where we're at.

I actually like the look of Chan's offense, minus the abandonment of the run. I understand the point that was made about being stuffed for 2 yard losses on 1st down, and it is very valid. Why wouldn't we try PA or just pass on first? We could even take a shot at the run, and if it were stopped, which the 6 YPC is saying we have the advantage, you get a chunk of that on 2nd. Bring up a 3rd and manageable.

We need to stop getting into 3rd and long. We struggle enough, and 3rd and long is where it seems we give up. Chan needs to get plays in that give us a chance. One more draw or screen on 3rd and long that gets stuffed is going to make me scream.

Freddy was as fired up as I've ever seen him, and we took the ball out of his hands...why?

concur. the bills were on pace to win that game if they stuck with the run. there was one drive early where fred ran for 10, spiller came in ran for 17, and then fred ran for 10+ again 2 plays later. and they were up.

this team needs a killer instinct. They haven't had it for years. it's sad.

I agree in general that they needed to stick with the run more than they have.

One thing they also need to do is get Jackson and Spiller more involved in the passing game. Jackson had 46 catches at 8+ YPC last year, and Spiller needs space to work with.

... and your offense is constantly putting you in passing situations due to penalties...

Check the three drives in 2nd half that started with Fred Jackson losing two yards in first down. That's why they got away from the run. Jax figured it out and started stuffing the Bills.

Stop looking at stats and start looking at the actual game, duh!
