Sorry if this has been posted already, but check out this post from Tim Graham at ESPN. This really surprised me. Should it give us some hope?

Unless it turns into another first down or some points, no.

Yeah but at least it may be something to build on. This is the first positive thing I've seen this year. It's sad, but I'm trying.

1st down is mostly about coaching (play-calling).
3rd down is mostly about having players who make plays.

The Bills have a pretty good play-caller.

They don't have good players.

That is a very telling stat.

I think we led the league last season in yards per rushing attempt on first down.

Considering the article focuses on the team's lack of production on second down, what is that about then?

Graham has a follow-up today:

Not surprisingly, the Bills rank dead last in second-down offense.

They have gained a league-low 268 yards on 174 second downs for an average of 1.5 yards per attempt.

They've passed for 76 yards, making them the NFL's only team with less than 100 yards through the air on second down. They've rushed for 192 yards, ranking 17th in the league.

So my speculation the Bills were skipping second down and going straight from first to third was only partially false.

They're getting outcoached AND outplayed on 2nd down.

As proof of the relevance of most statistics, Ryan Fitzpatrick is fourth in the NFL in QB rating.

Fitz hasn't been the problem.

Fitz hasn't been the problem.

I disagree. He went to Harvard, he should know how to rush the passer by now.
