Re: Paul Daugherty of the Cinci Enquirer is my guest tonight on Buffalo Bills Now!

Now that I have had time to mull over his interview with you last night, certain things have come to my attention. When this well decorated Ohio writer admitted to his own personal lack of perception on this team, I probably didn't see it the way the rest of the audience, or even the host may have. So, with that being said, I will give my take on that subject.

Decorated as a writer or not, anytime you know ahead of time what your going to face, the smarter thing to do is to know your enemy. Turning a blind eye to it because the record says it isn't formidable is always a mistake when making an analysis, and that is the problem with the majority of sports writers these days. They simply short cut their way through without actual research of a given situation. Assumption is the mother of all mess ups.

My conclusion of that interview is left with more questions than answers. If Mr. Daugherty were really as accomplished as his portfolio would suggest, why does he know so little about the team his Bengals are about to face being how early in the year the schedule had been released? It would just seem logical at least to me that any writer covering a team would at least attempt to gain first hand knowledge of the teams on that schedule to best prepare for such interviews as Mr. Daugherty had last night. The key to a good report from a viewers perspective is to make believable the facts you present give the impression that you actually know what your talking about.

In closing, it was a great show, and I didn't really feel it necessary to start a new thread based on this subject matter. So, I thought the best thing would be to comment on it here. Even if I am wrong here, I always try my best to be straight forward on where I stand. Thank you for reading.

ask him what he thought of Fitz back when he played for them compared to today. How far he thinks Fitz can go even though we kinda have an idea.

Daugherty is a columnist, not a reporter, which explains his lack of in-depth knowledge about the Bills. He doesn't cover the Bengals, he writes about them.

        There is a big difference.

Daugherty's job is not to show up with placating figures and facts, just to pet a Bills' audience on their heads. Folks in Cincinnati care about and learn about the Bills as much as folks in Buffalo care about and learn about the Bengals.

Two bum franchises, however you care to slice it. Sad but true.

I've read his columns for many a year. He knows the score, about the NFL. And he is indeed cynical - can't blame anyone there.

He covers most all sports, not just the NFL.

            Perhaps.

To "cover" the Bengals, you need to have permission from the club, if you want to show up on any property, or talk to a player. You must be vetted by management.

All players are prohibited - by contract - from speaking to any member of the press, unless it is in the stadium, or under the direct auspices of a member of management.

If you - a "reporter" - are deemed too critical by the management, you become persona non grata. See a B'gals post-game press conference with the sneering Marvin...

The only insight you will get is being escorted off the premises.

My point was he's not Joe Reedy - his focus is not 100% Bengals. He's a columnist who, as you also pointed out, writes about other topics besides the Bengals. His blog is pretty good too, and is also not focused on the Bengals.

                  You are indeed right.

He has an autistic daughter, that if IIRC, recently graduated from college. He wrote about it - quite a story, as you would imagine.

I'm glad you mentioned Reedy. He's a straight shooter in a tough business. He replaced Mark Curnutte, who suffered a divorce over the demands of the job. Curnutte was/is a fine reporter. He now and then has a non-sports feature piece in the local Cincinnati Enquirer.

My understanding is that today, these fellows not only have to kowtow to the clubs lest they be blackballed, they now have to keep up a constant blog. As well as being constantly under the threat of "downsizing."

                  Sad.

Thank you for your insight on this. I must admit that before his interview with Coach Sal, I knew nothing about him. In fact, I still don't. But my point was not to criticize Mr. Daugherty as much as it was to share a viewpoint of a subject that involved him on the Bills Now Show. What I took from that conversation between him and Coach Sal was represented as him having a pulse on the rest of the sports media world about how Buffalo has become irrelevant as a franchise.

My expression in that post was an attempt at clarifying how I see it. Although I may be wrong on a lot of things in that post in respect to Mr. Daugherty, I'm hoping that it doesn't lend credence to overlooking my point simply because of that. JMO
