NHL draft's impact overblown Just look at what happened in 1995

It was either an eerie flashback or an arresting premonition.

'Course, when you're watching the telly at 2 a.m. on a sleepless Monday, it's amazing what can captivate one's attention.

For this insomniac, it was a replay of the 1995 NHL entry draft in Edmonton, actually interesting viewing to see once again what seemed so smart at the time.

There were only 26 clubs, the Jets were still teetering on the edge in Winnipeg and Peter Karmanos was still pretending he could make a go of it in Hartford.

John Ferguson and Randy Sexton made Bryan Berard the first pick of the entire draft on behalf of the Ottawa Senators, Edmonton GM Glen Sather positively glowed over the selection of Steve Kelly at No. 6 and Whalers GM Jim Rutherford surprised many by snagging Quebec junior goalie Jean-Sebastien Giguere ahead of other highly qualified netminders.

Unless you have one of the top 3-5 picks the NHL draft means nothing...rounds 2-end are a crap shoot. The Sabres have a tendency of getting lucky in the later rounds. Personally, if the Sabres were making a serious run at the cup I would trade away an entrie draft to get one or two players to put the team over the top...then when you are bad you can always trade players away to get more picks.

didnt we get enought Future Considerations and draft picks when we:

      Traded Hasek to DET
      Traded Wooley to DET

I Dont remember seeing anything from OTTAWA or DALLAS for our Players (maybe some Minors i dont remember)

only good deal we got was Grattan For Brier.

The NHL draft is so meaningless and has so little impact within the first few years of drafting a player, I would not even hesistate outside of the top 3-4 overall picks of trading away draft choices for a known commodity.

I really hate Damien Cox's writing style, not to mention his opinions.
