Ralph and Mary Wilson announced today a $1 million donation to Kaleida Health to support adult day care and home care.

"As Ralph has gotten older, he has realized the importance of nursing and the caregiver," Mary M. Wilson, wife of the Buffalo Bills owner, said at an event at the DeGraff Memorial Hospital Adult Day Care Center in North Tonawanda.

The funding — $200,000 a year over five years — from the Ralph C. Wilson Foundation will be used to subsidize the cost of attendance and transportation to Kaleida Health's two adult day care programs at DeGraff and in Amherst.

It also will provide help to Kaleida Health's home care program, the Visiting Nursing Association, by supporting the purchase of medication management tools, personal emergency response systems, telehealth monitoring services and other programs.

Adult day care supports chronically ill and impaired adults age 18 and older with personal care and activities to help them maintain independence. It also serves to give families and caregivers a break from the demands of caring for a loved one.

Adults attend the program one to five days a week, depending on how much they are able to pay.

"[The Wilsons'] compassion and caring will directly impact our adult day care clients as well as those we serve in home care," said James R. Kaskie, president and chief executive officer of Kaleida Health.

The hospital system also operates Buffalo General, DeGraff Memorial, Millard Fillmore, Millard Fillmore Suburban, and Women and Children's hospitals.

The donation came about through Kaleida Health's ties to the Buffalo Bills.

Kaleida Health has been the official health care system of the football team since 2004, meaning it supplies the doctors on the sidelines, provides treatment to the players and engages in joint advertising with the football team.

Kaleida Health officials approached the foundation about a potential donation, knowing the Wilsons have become significant philanthropists here and elsewhere in the nation.

Their financial support over the years has gone to such organizations as Roswell Park Cancer Institute, Hospice Buffalo and the Miami Project to Cure Paralysis.

The Wilsons responded positively, although Ralph Wilson requested the money go toward services that directly affected patients' lives, said Michael Hughes, Kaleida Health spokesman.

Mary Wilson said the donation also reflects the love she and her husband have for Western New York.

"Ralph wants you to know how much he cares about the community," she said.

no concerns that Mary is speaking on his behalf? Ralph usually speaks on his own behalf. but a couple years he cut out halftime speeches, now he's not even talking about his own donations? without more information that seems to be a sign that he is really kind of showing his age.

Poor guy.

Unreal, the guy makes a nice donation and still gets ripped by fans of his team.

YaY for tax writeoffs!Grats you're a total tool!!! Only on billszone would people ***** about Ralphie doing something positive. Clearly the only reason he did this is for a tax write off, instead of actually caring!
