DB, help me out here. Why in the world would any Junior declare at this point? Yes, there will be a draft but it is my understanding there will be no rookie contracts without a new CBA as well. So not only will they not be playing football, but they'd have to solely rely on other income such as endorsements, etc. Is that correct?

Great question, the answer is that they are weighing risk v. reward. There is speculation that regardless of a lockout or not the CBA may give a one year waiting period till the rookie cap is installed, not guaranteed but its a consideration.

So if you fear that you wait, risk injury, and potentially come into a rookie cap league then maybe you leave early and potentially sit out a full season.

Just a head-up, DB, apparently a couple juniors at PSU are thinking about going pro. Nothing official yet, they'll probably put their names in with the advisory committee, but I'm guessing they won't hear good things back. The main name I've heard is Devon Still (he's got a kid he needs to support). I wouldn't be surprised if Derek Moye (said he was coming back) and D'Anton Lynn put their names in with the committee either, but that's mostly my own speculation.

Out of curiosity, if Still did enter the draft, where would you see him being picked? I think he'd be a decent 3-4 DE, personally, but I thought that about Odrick too and I know you disagreed.

Sorry to put this in the "official" thread, wasn't sure where else to put it without starting a new thread (which seemed to be a waste).

Not a fan of his ability to stand up at the POA on the outside when dealing with more athletic OT's.

He's 280 right now isn't he? I see Bunting compares him to Ferguson, but would a team put a top ten pick toward a guy who cannot block anything but zone?

He's listed at 280 but he doesnt look it. He looks closer to 300 and is super athletic. Im not sold on the Ferguson comparison yet, but I can see a few similarities.

The thing with ZBS guys isn't the fact that they only played in the scheme, its other stuff you look for like field awareness, can they spot blitzers coming from the 2nd level? Is there head on a constant swivel, how's their footwork?

You can test the other stuff like how fast their kick step is, how strong they are, etc.

The thing that hurt Bruce Campbell though most of all was just a complete lack of experience.

Id have a big problem with spending that high of a pick on him.I wouldn't see him going late 1, but in the 2nd round, I wouldn't mind. he was inconsistent this year because he still is developing. But I strill like him better than Locker based on what we've seen (not potential). I think he would be a very good fit due to his size, arm strength, and familiarity with spread sets and the shotgun that we seem to want to run so much. I like his ability to read defenses and go through progressions and I like that he shown an ability to make something happen with his arm or feet when he rolls out. To me, he should go back to school and show he can gain more poise in the pocket, he seemed to get happy feet and would pull it down to early at times. And like I said, I think he can further develop his decision making a.l.a. Mallett.

But if he declares, I'd love to have him develop both those areas under Fitz and Chan. I really like what I think he can become.

Buckeyes' center Mike Brewster among five Ohio State juniors who asked for NFL evaluations

Published: Wednesday, December 15, 2010, 4:52 PM Updated: Wednesday, December 15, 2010, 9:45 PM
By Doug Lesmerises, The Plain Dealer

GROVE CITY, Ohio -- Ohio State center Mike Brewster was one of two Buckeyes to earn first-team All-American honors this season. Wednesday, he confirmed he was one of five juniors to submit paperwork to the NFL to have his draft status evaluated.

A bit surprisingly, defensive end Nathan Williams said he was not one of the five, choosing to skip the process because he said it was too much of a hassle and he was going to come back for his senior year, no matter what.

Ohio State coach Jim Tressel said Tuesday how many players had taken that step, but he declined to name them. In years past, the coach has sometimes spilled the beans on the names and other times kept it to himself.

Frankly, getting the information from the NFL isn't that big of a deal. In the previous four years, four, 13, six and 10 juniors asked for the evaluation, which only gives players an educated guess at where they'd go in the draft within a two-round range.

I think a lot of guys are going to wait to see what happens with the CBA. If the CBA is extended, you will see a lot more guys come out. If it is not, then some Juniors might decide to stay in school another year.

The CBA extension is big for trades as well. You won't be able to make trades involving players before the draft unless the CBA is extended. You can trade draft picks for draft picks, but not players for players or players for draft picks (minus a CBA extension).

Sounds good in theory, but because the timing won't be right, it will probably have little impact.

Its already had a massive impact. Nick Saban called all his draft eligible players in for a meeting and told them not to leave early because of the CBA issues. Coaches around the country are using this is as big time leverage and its working. Looking how small the list is as of now.

The days of the huge rookie contracts are over. That ended when the owners opted to end the current CBA. I think it's pretty much a foregone conclusion that any draftee this year and in the future will have a contract which fits into the new rookie wage scale. So, money wouldn't seem to be the issue.

The only viable reason to stay because of the CBA situation would be if the draftees believed there was going to be a work stoppage. Why sit at home for part of next season when you could be playing football for your college.

As far as the pace at which these players are declaring, I would think the major reason is that we haven't gone through all the bowl games yet. I think we will see the pace pickup after X-mas and when we get into early Jan.

Just my :2cents:

You realize no CBA means that no rookie will get a contract, so any kid who leaves early is going to be sitting home broke right?

The draftees better damn well believe there is gonna be a work stoppage, because that's how bad the situation is. Which is what every coach in the country is telling their kids.

Obviously I could be wrong but everyone stands to lose a lot out of this.

Two more:

CB - Aaron Williams - Texas
WR - DeAndre Brown - Southern Miss

Williams, a two-year starter at Texas, says he was told by the NFL draft advisory board that he’s likely to be a first- or second-round pick. Brown, a 6-foot-6, 239-pounder who has great athletic talent but has been slowed by injuries, probably can’t expect to go that high.

Also, the 5 suspended Buckeyes apparently pledged to return to Ohio State next season. Of course, they needed to do that to play in the Sugar Bowl and could change their minds, so stay tuned.

Here's the breakdown of what is about to happen, regardless of CBA, Junior, etc. Any time a player is interested in going into the draft with an agent, (from say December when they de-enroll at school until they (usually) sign their contract in August) that player is accumulating nothing as far as money.

So when they go to the speed camps, when they go clubbing with their boys and when they buy cars, jewelry, etc their agent is paying for it as a loan. When they do this, they keep track and charge (for some agents overcharge) interest and when the player gets his first contract, that agent is reimbursed for the "loans" as well as the agent's 3%.

Now compound that with the labor issues as DB mentioned - as a kid who declares early, you are essentially saying you're willing to bet that you'll be able to survive until, say October of 2011 with no money other than those loans. That's a very, very, very bad situation to be in.

Updating a previous item, Florida CB Janoris Jenkins will not leave school for the NFL draft in 2011.

"After careful consideration, I've made a decision to return to school for my senior year," he said. Though he would've been a second-round pick at worst, it's an understandable decision because Jenkins recently underwent reconstructive right shoulder surgery. He'll be a first-rounder in 2012.

Looks like it's inching toward the same amount as last year (53, 54?). Interesting.

Cam must be waiting until the last minute. He'd be crazy to stay at Auburn.

RB Stevan Ridley is entering the draft:

LSU RB Stevan Ridley announced Thursday that he will forgo his senior season and enter the NFL draft.

Ridley only started one year for the Tigers, but probably should've been ahead of Keiland Williams and Charles Scott all along. A power back at 6'0/223, the tackle breaker ranked fourth in the SEC in 2010 rushing with 1,147 yards and 15 TDs, earning first-team all-conference accolades from the coaches and averaging 4.61 YPC in an LSU offense that posed little threat of a downfield passing attack. Ridley caught just 17 passes in his college career, however, so he'll have work to do to earn immediate playing time at the next level.
