Patterson leaving Texans to be Blazers president

Texans senior vice president and chief development officer Steve Patterson, who spent five years as the Rockets general manager, is leaving to become president of the Portland Trail Blazers.

An official announcement will be made today.

Patterson, 45, oversaw the Texans' negotiations for the lease, design, financing and construction of Reliant Stadium, which opened last year. He also was one of the leading forces in helping Texans owner Bob McNair secure the expansion franchise.

After his stint as the Rockets GM from 1989-1993, Patterson served as president and general manager of the Aeros and was named International Hockey League Executive of the Year in 1995.

While Patterson has been a successful executive in multiple sports, his roots are in basketball. He spent a total of nine years with the Rockets, learning the business under his father, Ray, who was Rockets general manager from 1972-1989.

Patterson, through a Texans spokesman, declined comment until an official announcement.
