Hopefully he can at least be a pass rush specialist for us.

The writing was on the wall, as Merriman himself doubted he'd be able to return by Week 17. He'll enter free agency with only his name recognition to hang his hat on; his talent has long since gone. A team would be hard pressed to guarantee him a contract, and it's not crazy to think that his NFL career has come to an end.

At least he's only guaranteed 2.5 million.

very nice contract...he can't hurt the team, pass rushing LBers may be a strength next year...now we need LBers in run support

YardRat

I can live with that. Still want two quality guys from FA, though.

i wonder if kelsay even makes the team next year if merriman comes back ready to go.... moats could take his spot...

Buddy Nix did a great job with this. 2.5 mil guaranteed is very affordable and 2 years leaves us with no long term commitment. The old Bills' brass would have overpaid and over committed themselves to a free agent like Merriman who may not be worth it.

But if Merriman returns to form, he is a stud and something we sorely miss. A talented pass rusher. Good move.

Mahdi
01-01-2011, 04:56 PM
And that proves to those who didn't think we should sign him that taking the small risk to bring him in was worth it.

This guy is going to work very hard to get back to his best and get a new contract and he will do that for us.

That gives us Merriman, Moats, Kelsay, Batten... that is depth required to win games.

Yes.

think maybin is here next year?

Yes, but will he make it through training camp? Maybe. But if we draft somebody and he out performs him, Gailey has no tied to Maybin. Maybin was a Jauron pick. Gailey doesn't strike me as a guy un-willing to cut ties.

Forgot Maybin. If he gets stronger in the lower body he can have an impact. Technique also.

My God people. Why would you annoint Batten over Maybin like it is so sure? Who knows if Batten even recovers correctly. Sure Maybin has shown barely anything but at least he wasn't hurt for the season.....

He's only 27 years old. Other players have come back from injury, I think he is worth a shot, nothing to lose.

Son of a *****!!! I was at the store when I got the vtext...I knew you wouldnhave this up already!!!

This is a good move, and having the exclusive opportunity to negotiate was worth what he cost us for 15 minutes of practice, if he can produce... Otherwise be took Ralph to the cleaners and could make over 3 mil for 15 minutes.

I like the move for what it is, but I like it for what it represents. Merriman didn't want to come, but he did...then he decided to stay. Anybody can say that he wouldn't have gotten any other offers, but for what he signed for the entire AFC West would have paid to pick his brain on the Charger's D alone. He made a comment a while back about if he stayed it would be because of the guys here...that is some high praise.

He must have been convinced that we are going in the right direction, because this deal isn't all about the money!!!

bumbling bf1 thinks merriman is a has been. what a surprise. even if he doesn't come back to form i think this is very smart of buddy and worth a shot. merriman coming back stong will fill a major hole that the bills have.

lol, if it ain't broke ...don't fix it right?

As for Merriman..I wasn't keen on his signing mid-season because I thought he'd take time away from our own guys' development namely Maybins. But I don't mind this move, very little to lose.

I'm too lazy to go back and get my thread, but when the Bills claimed Merriman, Glazer was on NFL Network laughing saying why he knows for a fact that Merriman wouldn't resign with the Bills and how it was a dumb move. Glazer is an idiot a lot of times and his arrogance rubs me the wrong way. This makes him look like a fool and I'd love to see somebody call him out on it tomorrow during the pregame shows.

He comes across a little toolish and his public twitter fight last week with NFLN's Jason La Canorfa doesn't help him any.

That being said his record is damn near impeccable.

It's an interesting move, but I seriously doubt Merriman even gets close to his former self. Can guys recover from injury? Sure. But how long has it been since he's even been remotely effective? It's just not likely at this point, no matter how young he is. I can easily see the Bills cutting him after 2011 and he'll be a journeyman the rest of the way, providing depth and having teams take a chance on him, hoping he'll return to his old glory.

Yeah, I remember seeing him on NFL network making fun of the Bills for signing Merriman & saying he would not resign.

this was never about comp picks or blocking him from another team with a waiver claim. i have stated before and i firmly believe, nix wanted him from the go. their was never a chance that he didnt play for buffalo next season. we would have transition tagged him if he didnt sign an extension... and no team would have given us a 2nd or 3rd round pick on a transition tag for him.. we would have forced his hand if he didnt take this. it was clear the bills wanted him here for the future.

jimbohastle51
01-02-2011, 03:06 AM
you can bank in the next month you will see a paul P. extension too. andra davis is under contract for peanuts next year and ayedole is easily resignable if we want him over davis. the next big bills signing will be an extension for poz. and possibly drayton florence if they cut mcgee. if mcgee stays florence goes, if they resign florence mcgee gets cut.

NOT THE DUDE...

i think mcgee gets cut, and whitner is gone... they keep florence, youboty, wilson, poz....

i think the bills draft a ilb to replace davis and also draft a ilb to back up poz...

they will draft dareus, and sign a fa de/nt like paul soliai...

UFA Florence will get big $$ for someone. They will not cut McGee.

You really need to get some new glue.

even if we lose florence and whitner, but resign wilson and youboty, we still better not draft a cb with our first 5 picks. we can pick up 2nd tier cb and a guy like eric weddle to play ss. pass rush improves secondary play!

i have a feeling this is true. nix has no allegence to mcgee but florence was once one of his high draft picks in SD.. nix was the one who found florence at tuskegee so i think poz and florence get paid and mcgee gets the ax to give his money to florence. as far as whitner i dont think he comes back. they are set with byrd and have scott and wilson there to fill the void and can draft a S in the mid rounds as well. whitner is alot easier to replace than poz or florence.
