Veteran center signs one-year contract
After signing a new one-year contract, Saints veteran center Jerry Fontenot returned to the team Tuesday and will have a starting job awaiting him when training camp opens July 26, Coach Jim Haslett said.
Fontenot, 36, missed the team's entire offseason program while settling his status as an unrestricted free agent. The Saints' offseason program ends today with a practice from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Superdome.
"You can tell Jerry's been in the league a number of years, and he figures out when to come back," Haslett said with a wink. "But it's nice to have Jerry back. He's a good guy. He runs the offense well, and our guys are excited to have him back....
