The majority of Mockers believe the Bills will be drafting defense with their first pick. I hope they are right.
3. Buffalo Bills- 3-4 DE Nick Fairley (Auburn)
Poor Bills. They’re out of Luck. Literally. They could reach for a quarterback here, but I think they opt for a defensive player instead. Ryan Fitzpatrick has been okay this year and they might want to see what he can do with a better supporting cast. If they fall in love with Cam Newton or Ryan Mallett, they may take him here or trade down (very tough) and get one of them later, but that’s not as likely.
Fairley had Ndamukong Suh like numbers this year, with 21 tackles for loss and 11.5 sacks as a 6-5 305 defensive tackle. Given Suh’s success as the #2 overall pick in Detroit this year, and, to some extent Gerald McCoy’s success in Tampa Bay as the #3 overall pick, teams are going to be more and more willing to pull the trigger on stud DTs early in future years. Fairley is no exception. He’s a perfect fit for this team as he can fit both a 3-4 and a 4-3 and the Bills run a little of both. He upgrades both their pass rush (29th in the league with 27) and their run defense (32nd in the league with a YPC allowed of 4.8).
4. Bills: Patrick Peterson, CB, LSU – Such a strong prospect, he commands top 4 overall consideration.

Some Positions Of Need: QB, DE, DT, WR
DaQuan Bower from Clemson
1-3 The Bills desperately need defensive playmakers in their front seven. The run defense has been very poor as has their pass rush. The secondary has actually been pretty decent so they'll be looking for the best front seven guy on the board. That's probably Bowers, another special talent who is putting it all together this year for Clemson. Best suited as a 4-3 DE but he's more than capable of fitting in as a 3-4 DE with some good explosion as an inside pass rusher and the power to hold up against the run. Dareus is a consideration here too but I think Bowers has more upside.
3. Buffalo – Patrick Peterson CB, LSU: The Bills have a tough decision to make at QB with Ryan Fitzpatrick playing so well. I think they stick with him for another year and roll with the top corner in the draft.
3. BUF: Nick Fairley, DE, Auburn*
Few players have made a bigger splash in the last couple of months than Auburn defensive end and tackle Nick Fairley. He is having a great year and has garnered plenty of attention while Auburn prepares for a trip to the BCS National Championship game. He will have the biggest stage in all of college football to cement his place on the top of the defensive linemen pecking order.
3 Marcell Dareus

Head Coach: Chan Gailey (too much promise last year to warrant a one-and-done)
I wouldn't be happy with this pick in Toronto...I mean, Buffalo. Yes, DE is a need, regardless of if this team is a 4-3 or a 3-4, but Dareus has underperformed his way out of the Top 3.
3. Blaine Gabbert QB from Missouri
The Bills need a QB. Ryan Fitzpatrick is a nice guy who can lead a team to an 8-8 record but he is not the answer. Rather than bite the bullet Buffalo has not selected a potential elite franchise QB in a long time. Hence why they have missed the playoffs in over 10 years. I think they will find it tough for the Bills to pass on Gabbert if he declares. Look Gabbert is no slam dunk to succeed. However he has the physical tools, is tough, has experience playing in bad weather, and has had college produciton in a BCS conference at Mizzou. Although the trend has been for teams to pass on QB prospects they are not entirely sold on at the top of the NFL draft. QBs who bust often carry big contracts that must be satisfied. A cheap team like the Bills just does not want to take the risk on a QB who can bust. However, at some point you have to bite the proverbial bullet. Gabbert is ranked over Newton by many scouts and does not carry the character risk.

01/03/2011: I previously had the Bills taking Nick Fairley with the 4th overall pick. Now that they move into the 3rd pick in the 2011 NFL Draft I believe they have a shot at getting Bowers. If the Broncos take Bowers then they most likely will stick with Nick Fairley but in this scenario they get Bowers a disruptive defensive freak. He is similar to Brian Orakpo who the Bills foolishly passed on 2 years ago. I believe that Bowers can play both a rush LB position as well as a true defensive end in the NFL.
12/30/2010: The Bills get the top rated 2011 NFL DT and keep the same draft pick I projected them to have last week.

The Bills have many different options with this draft pick. They are in desperate need of an offensive tackle and quarterback. The only problem is with this pick in the 2011 NFL mock draft there is no worthy candidates. Saying that they should be looking to trade down and get more draft picks this year but if they do stay in this draft slot then I would go with a dynamic defensive player like Patrick Peterson. He is a very good cover corner as well as a great return specialist.
