    Which route for Northcutt?

Receiver, Browns talking contract, but another big-number season could turn into big-number deal
    By Patrick McManamon
    Beacon Journal staff writer

With Browns backup running back Jamel White and defensive end Mark Word signed, wide receiver Dennis Northcutt appears to be the next prime candidate for a contract extension. His deal expires after the 2003 season.

Northcutt said last week at the Browns' three-day minicamp that the team has approached him about an extension, but the sides are not close.

In fact, the two sides aren't in the same ballpark. Then again, the sides weren't that close when the Browns and White started talking, either.

Signing Northcutt figures to be a challenge. He has to know that if he merely matches his performance of 2002, he will be a very valuable free agent after the season.

Remember: It only takes one team to make a free agent a very rich man.
