    Cookie Gilchrist is dead

Former Buffalo Bills great running back Cookie Gilchrist died early today in an assisted living facility in Pittsburgh, his nephew, Thomas Gilchrist, confirmed this morning.

Gilchrist had been in the hospital since September battling cancer, which had spread through his body. He was 75.

Gilchrist was one of the greatest Bills players ever. He played in Buffalo for three seasons, from 1962 to 1964. He was a star on the Bills' 1964 AFL Championship team. Gilchrist gained 3,056 rushing yards with 31 rushing touchdowns for Buffalo. He set a pro football single-game rushing record with 243 yards in a game against the New York Titans in 1962. He made first-team All-AFL in 1962, '64 and '65, and he was on the second-team in '63. He played for Denver in 1965 and '67 and Miami in '66.

Before joining the Bills, Gilchrist was one of the greatest players in the history of the Canadian Football League, where he played for five years.

And yet neither Hall of Fame has considered him for entry. A shame.

he was not in anyones pool
I remember that one fateful day when Coach took me aside. I knew what was coming. "You don't have to tell me," I said. "I'm off the team, aren't I?"
"Well," said Coach, "you never were really ON the team. You made that uniform you're wearing out of rags and towels, and your helmet is a toy space helmet.
You show up at practice and then either steal the ball and make us chase you to get it back, or you try to tackle people at inappropriate times."
      It was all
true what he was saying. And yet, I thought something is brewing inside the head of this Coach.
He sees something in me, some kind of raw talent that he can
mold. But that's when I felt the handcuffs go on.

...and before anybody says about putting him on the Wall of Fame CG is a member of the Bills Hall of Fame which existed before the new stadium. Years ago, Larry Felser reported that because of that honor CG would never get on the wall. I disagree, he should be put up there.

        May he RIP.

It's a shame he and Ralph could never settle their differences.

How many of his players has he now outlived?

He was one of my favorites. I actually got to meet him when I went to my first Bills game at the Rockpile as a kid.

            RIP, Cookie.

And that probably is another reason that CG isn't on the wall...same with Saban.

                  sad stuff.

i wonder if in the coming years, the deaths all start happening in the player's 40's and 50's. It's gone from being a sport to a death match.

Cookie is my favorite Bills RB of all time even over Thurmal who I loved.
