Schefter: Dave Wannstedt To Talk To Bills About Coaching Opportunity

Former Pitt head coach Dave Wannstedt likely won't soon be coaching another NFL team, years after stints with the Bears and Dolphins.

I wouldn't mind bringing him in on the defensive side of the ball.

Former Chicago Bears, Miami Dolphins and University of Pittsburgh head coach Dave Wannstedt is expected to discuss a coaching opportunity with the Buffalo Bills, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter (via Twitter).
We first heard rumors that Wannstedt could be linked to Buffalo over the holidays, and just last week, the Bills released inside linebackers coach DeMontie Cross from his contract, creating a vacancy defensively. Wannstedt, who worked with current Bills head coach Chan Gailey in Miami (Gailey was Wannstedt's offensive coordinator in 2000 and 2001), has 35 years' worth of coaching experience, ranging from defensive line work all the way up to the top job.
It's not clear if Gailey has a specific role in mind for Wannstedt, particularly with George Edwards entrenched as the defensive coordinator and the only job opening at the inside linebacker position. A special title would almost certainly be involved. Wannstedt also has an opportunity to join Pitt's athletic department.
Schefter also reports that Wannstedt could talk about coaching opportunities with the Carolina Panthers, Cleveland Browns and San Diego Chargers. San Diego is looking for a new defensive coordinator now that Ron Rivera has been named Carolina's head coach, and Wannstedt could also serve on Rivera's Panthers staff in some capacity.

I'd take Wanny as a D-coach any day. He's a great Defensive guy, hopefully he NEVER steps foot near the head coaching job.

Wasn't Edwards a LB coach previously? Could they move him back and have Wanny take over the D?

Ah you beat me to it! I was just thinking that while reading the football updates.

I doubt Edwards would be happy about that. It's a demotion.

                    Better than being fired.

But it's an upgrade as far as the Bills are concerned. Maybe Edwards will be a team player. It's not like last season will look very good on his resume as it stands now.

If they want Wanny to be the DC, fire Edwards. Demoting a guy probably wouldn't work out too well.

Which he deserves. He could take it or leave it.

Not a bad move, but i think it'd be wiser if they went and got Eric Mangini to coach the defense.

Most likely not, but it depends on the guy. Edwards was the LB coach before coming here, so maybe (although doubtful) that would be a spot he'd be willing to return to instead of losing his job.

Or, we could hire Wannstedt as Assistant Head Coach and have him sit in the booth on Sundays giving Edwards his perspective. That's a bit of a luxury position, and one that Ralph most likely wouldn't be very thrilled about paying for, but it is a possibility... especially if Buddy and Chan can convince the old man that it is a big gain in terms of performance.
