Nabokov and Red Wings strike a deal

I found this interesting because the contract is dirt cheap (pro-rated salary of 250,000) for the rest of the season and he has to clear waivers to play in Detroit, meaning all the other teams would have a crack at him for that price. Might be interesting for a team that doesn't trust their backup goaltender and is playing their starter to death.

I have always been a fan of his.
I remember that one fateful day when Coach took me aside. I knew what was coming. "You don't have to tell me," I said. "I'm off the team, aren't I?"
"Well," said Coach, "you never were really ON the team. You made that uniform you're wearing out of rags and towels, and your helmet is a toy space helmet.
You show up at practice and then either steal the ball and make us chase you to get it back, or you try to tackle people at inappropriate times."
      It was all
true what he was saying. And yet, I thought something is brewing inside the head of this Coach.
He sees something in me, some kind of raw talent that he can
mold. But that's when I felt the handcuffs go on.

Islanders claimed him. The waiver process in the nhl is crazy.

Yeah, that is pretty dumb. The Red Wings work out a deal with Nabakov and another team gets the chance to claim him? That is just about as the dumbest thing I have heard. If that is the case, Nabakov's deal with Detroit should be eliminated and the Islanders have to make a new deal.

This stops teams from stashing players in Europe and then signing them halfway through the year.

It is one of the few logical things the NHL does

He's not even going to NY. He's staying over in Russia.

which makes him non- eligible for play for the rest of the 2010-2011 season according to the CBA

I like this move by the Isles... make the red wings give something up.

If they try to trade him, he has to go through waivers again.

I kinda think the Islanders are dicks. They have no use for Nabokov and they aren't in the WC, so they should have no incentive to screw the Wings.
