On Location: Shrine Game Recap | Day Three

On Location: Shrine Game Recap | Day Three
Written by Joe Everett Thursday, 20 January 2011 08:21
Here's a recap of day three practice in Orlando at the 86th Annual East-West Shrine Game. This report was filed by NFL Draft Analyst Joe Everett who is on location:
    EAST SQUAD RISERS

ANTHONY SHERMAN – FB – UCONN: Sherman is a traditional fullback that has adequate size and the strength required to stone linebackers in the open lane. I was continually impressed with his hard charging running and old school blocking today.
SCOTT LUTRUS – LB –UCONN: Lutrus isn’t the best athlete by any stretch of the imagination but he’s assignment sound and he sheds blocks well while maintaining his vision in pursuit of the ball carrier. He took proper angles on plays to the outside and absolutely blew up a screen pass today.
DAVID ARKIN – OG – MISSOURI STATE: This small school product is going about his business and doing it well. He’s a mobile big man that has shown the agility to get to the second level and the natural strength to be effective in the running game. Regardless of where he goes in the draft, he’s a player that can readily contribute as a guard.
AKEM DENT – LB – GEORGIA: Dent struggled yesterday shedding blocks and weaving through traffic but he did much better freeing himself up today. He also had a few hits on the day that you heard before you saw. He’s more of a thumper that should be a good fit in a 3-4 defense, so he can take advantage of his size and strength.
MARTIN PARKER – DT – RICHMOND: The Richmond product has been impressive inside against the other guards on the East. He’s got ideal size for a five technique in a 3-4 defense but he could also fit as an under tackle in a cover-2 scheme.
    EAST SQUAD SLIDERS

TYROD TAYLOR – QB – VIRGINIA TECH: In Taylor’s defense, there’s not a lot that scouts expected of the Virginia Tech product because of his limited size and suspect accuracy. While he hasn’t been bad, he just hasn’t shown anything that indicates he could be effective at the next level.
CECIL SHORTS – WR – MOUNT UNION: Cecil Shorts has a lot of fans here in Orlando but he has struggled with drops, mental mistakes, and a general lack of quickness. He hasn’t done a good job of separating from defenders and was injured today with an ice pack on the back of his right knee.
DEMARCUS VAN DYKE – CB – MIAMI: The former Hurricane has quickness and good height but he lacks bulk, with stork –like legs on his rail-thin frame. He’s been struggling with footing, slipping a lot on the field here at Mobile and has been beaten more often than not.
    WEST SQUAD RISERS
ALEX GREEN – RB – HAWAII: Green is a hard charging back that makes a lot of plays with his extra effort and running strength. He runs very low to the ground and has a nice lower body build with thick thighs, making him difficult to wrap up at the legs.
DA’RELL SCOTT – RB – MARYLAND: This Maryland Terrapin has been impressive thus far and made some big plays today. He had a run to the right side of the field, then put on a sweet little shake to the inside and left Fresno State linebacker Chris Carter grasping for air. Scott is an explosive back that will be a valued member of a committee in the NFL.
RYAN WHALEN – WR – STANFORD: Whalen has turned in a great week thus far on the whole and he’s made some fabulous receptions on over-thrown balls that looked uncatchable. Today he stayed after practice with Wisconsin’s Scott Tolzien to work on routes, which proves how much he wants to get better.
JULIUS THOMAS – TE – PORTLAND STATE: Thomas is a small-school product that is drawing comparisons to Packers’ Tight End Jermichael Finley and for good reason. He has a nice ling frame and a great set of hands. He has the ball skills to pluck the football out of the air with ease and his speed for a 240 pound man is sure to have scouts drooling.
WILLIAM RACKLEY – OG – LEHIGH: This Lehigh product has been creating a lot of buzz these last two days and today he was a rock on the inside. While he has lined up at tackle for some drills, he struggled mightily against some quicker ends but he projects as a guard at the next level and he held his ground well when lined up on the interior.
    WEST SQUAD SLIDERS

JERROD JOHNSON – QB – TEXAS A&M: Johnson is the definition of a struggling player. His delivery isn’t exactly terrible but it’s his accuracy that will keep him from being selected in the draft. He has a tendency to hold onto the ball too long and does not show any kind of chemistry with the West receivers.
JOSEPH BARKSDALE – OT – LSU: To quote one of the scouts here at Orlando; “Nobody does less with more than Joseph Barksdale”. It’s absolutely true that Barksdale has been a disappointment throughout his career in Baton Rouge and he’s continuing to disappoint in Orlando. He looks out of shape and was on the sideline nursing cramps in yesterday’s practice.
DONTAY MOCH – OLB – NEVADA: Moch has been playing out of position here in Orlando as an outside linebacker and while he’s more of a pass rushing specialist, the teams that are interested in him want to see that he’s not a complete liability in coverage. The problem remains that Moch is a liability in coverage and at 229 pounds, he’s not going to cut the mustard at defensive end or outside linebacker.

Moch is just to small. J. Johnson just isn't very good. He's already been discussed around here earlier in the year. I don't know what everyone see's in Lutrus either. I've never been impressed with him. Unfortunately this is the type of guy the Bills like to draft.

There was a rumor floating around in the last week or two that Dontay Moch can run an insanely fast 40, but that's all for haught if he's got no instincts and to few brains to know how the game of football is played. Maybe he'd better switch to track.
I've made up my mind. Don't confuse me with the facts.

I'm the most reasonable poster here. If you don't agree, I'll be forced to have a hissy fit.

What was it Dwight Adam's used to say?

"Yeah he's fast, but all that means is that when he makes a bad read he gets out of position quicker than anybody else."

          He ran a reported sub 4.4 40.
