The Cleveland Plain Dealer reports: Former Bears coach Dick Jauron is expected to be named defensive coordinator of the Cleveland Browns on Friday, sources told the paper.

Jauron, who was fired as the Bills head coach last season, coached the Eagles' secondary this season.

Another former Bears coach, Dave Wannstedt, was also a candidate for the Browns position, but was hired as the Bills' assistant head coach/linebackers coach on Friday.

It's hard to coordinate a defense in the NFL.

well seeing that the challenges, the timeouts, and the offense is in someone else's hands, jauron isn't such a bad pick. but when the browns are defending a 3 point lead and jauron is playing off everyone to avoid giving up a TD, hopefully there is a HC that can tell him to stop being so damn conservative.

Has this guy ever even had a great defense? Just going by memory, it seems to me that Jauron defenses are usually middle of the pack, at best.

He's only been DC twice:

Jacksonville Jaguars
1995: 21st (YPG), 28th (PPG)
1996: 15th (YPG), 19th (PPG)
1997: 23rd (YPG), 15th (PPG)
1998: 25th (YPG), 17th (PPG)

-- rankings are out of 30 teams

Detroit:
2004: 22nd (YPG), 18th (PPG)
2005: 20th (YPG), 21st (PPG)

Hard to blame him for the Detroit defenses - they've always been bad. But overall, I see nothing that would make him worthy of a DC or HC job. Why exactly did the Bears hire him for the 1999 season? None of his Jacksonville defenses were that good overall. The best he's ever been was mediocre.

Jacksonville was an expansion team, so he probably got some credit for doing something while not having alot to work with.

listening to philly sports radio last night, the host was screaming that the eagles should be going after Jauron to be their DC.

Really do you remember that expansion process

panthers and jags got a great deal out of that.

then browns came along and got nothing

i think texans had it in the middle but not sure.

With their 1st pick, the Texans picked OT Tony Boselli from the Jags. A huge mistake as he was already injured & would never really play for them.

He used the same excuse with us and will again with the Browns.

Seems like his only good year was with Chicago and their D was great before he got there.

What a Dick head.

Sweet. Maybe they will switch to an undersized 4-3 and hook us up with a nose tackle or two.

He'll beg Holmgren to draft 5 DB's minimum this April, whether they need them or not.

Then they'll unveil their new 2-9 D.

Funny thing is, he's never been a good DC in this league, yet people say he has...
