ATLANTA -- The director of academic services at Georgia Tech was reassigned Wednesday, a month after 10 football players were declared academically ineligible for next season.

Carol Moore will become a special assistant to the vice provost. She will be replaced by Col. James Stevens, a former Georgia Tech player who is retiring from the U.S. Air Force after a 27-year career.

Stevens, who has master's degrees in business administration and logistics, has been a professor of aerospace studies at the school for the last three years. During that time, he also commanded a detachment in the Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps.

As a player, he was the MVP of the Liberty Bowl in 1972.

"As part of his duties, we have asked Col. Stevens to visit a number of universities well known for the academic success of their student-athletes to see what we might learn from their experience," school President Wayne Clough said in a statement.

A men's tennis player also lost his eligibility.

The announcement came the same day the football program was honored by the American Football Coaches' Association for graduating at least 70 percent of its freshman class from 1997-98. Georgia Tech was one of 32 Division I-A schools receiving the award.
