So, the Sabres made Rivet captain and pay him $3.5 million a year, and usually he's a healthy scratch.

Clearly, age has caught up with the guy, but I'm confused about a few things.

First, I remember a few years ago when NHLN first came on the air- the coach of TB or some other struggling team made their captain a healthy scratch to make a point, and all the hockey pundits were making a huge deal out of it. Is it commonplace for captains to be healthy scratches now? Or are we the only ones who do it because we were dumb enough to pay a lot of money to a guy who no longer has the physical ability to play the game?

Second, why don't the Sabres just name someone else captain? It's weird to see two A's and no C's out there for our side. Is there some etiquette or unwritten rule about not changing C's during a season?

Derek Roy would have been Captain, that is my guess. He should be the Captain and will be when he returns from injury next year.

I think if you scratch a captain who is healthy and playing well to make a point, it's a big deal. if you are asking your 30+ year old defensemen to sit the bench because he's terrible, it's not such a big deal. Especially on a team on the outside looking in.

Is rivet's contract up at the end of the year as well?

I have no idea what Ruff is doing about the captain. Since he used to be a Sabres captain, I guess he feels not having one is no big deal. Plus, the Sabres organization has a history of screwing over the captain.

I think if you scratch a captain who is healthy and playing well to make a point, it's a big deal. if you are asking your 30+ year old defensemen to sit the bench because he's terrible, it's not such a big deal. Especially on a team on the outside looking in.

Is rivet's contract up at the end of the year as well?

If your captain isn't good enough to play, then replace him.

Most teams have one of their better players as a Captain and many of these guys are exactly the same type of leader that Roy is. Not too many loud and vocal leaders on the list. Roy would make a good Captain to me and would get more respect with the "C" on his sweater. Roy still sometimes does not get calls when they are clear penalties back from his flop a lot days.

those captains that you named are much more physical and have a "play like me" attitude.

Roy is a fineses guy who gets the job done, but he's smallish and not exactly the leader that can say, "let's go to battle, i got your back."

just look at the assistant captains. I bet Lindy chose them. Hecht, Pomminville, Roy, and Gaustad. Only one of those guys is the kind of leader that could be a captain, but he just isn't good enough as a scorer.

Canadians have Gionta as Captain, he had 1 big season, the rest Roy was the same or better. How is he different? Same PMs too.Roy's stats are better. Roy doesn't have the points og Joe THornton, is Thornton a vocal leader? NO. Is he a big hitter? Not even close in San Jose. Same as Eric Staal too. Same as Jonathan Toews. not one of these guys is a big vocal leader, just a top point producer with 30-50 PMs a year. Miller is the real Captain, the team knows it. Are people seriously trying to say the Sedin's are the vocal leaders of the Canucks? What about Mikko Koivu? He is not close to the leader his brother Saku was in Montreal, just their top point producer.

Roy is the closest guy to a clutch non goalie player we have. No current team has a Gausted type guy as the "C". No one has a Rivet either. Just us. Islanders are closest with Doug Weight, and they better put the "C" on Tavaras or Matt Moulson next year.

I don't get the Roy hatred, he is Sabres best forward. .82 points a game for his career, that really is not too bad. Scores a good amount of GWGs and Game tying goals and is good on the shootout. He would be a huge star in a bigger city. Like I said, he has better career stats than Brian Gionta who is the Montreal Canadians Captain.

I was actually happy that he got hurt and is out the rest of the season. Frustrated that he can't get traded though; I think we could get really good value out of him. He has talent, yes, but lacks the physicality/clutch abilities/leadership presence I want out of a captain. Is Rivet any better? No, he doesn't even play. Was Briere/Drury a physical presence? No, but they were the definition of clutch. Peca was all three, IMO. I'm not going to go down the list of Captains, but Roy does not fit the bill in any way, shape, or form. He's an above average forward, in my eyes, nothing more.

Just my $.02, I'm sure others see it differently.. I just hope he never wears the C, it would be a travesty.
