The 24 hour deal could be viewed differently depending on where you stand on the issue. From what I've been able to gather from around the web and different sports media sites is that they may be trying to work out a longer extension period. What I'm hearing is basically speculation but it sounds like some are talking a 2 week window to work out negotiations.
If that doesn't work, the players union will have until 5pm to reach a Minnesota court to decertify as a union which would allow them to seek a lawsuit if the Owners lock them out. If they fail to decertify before the lockout happens, the Owners win. The union would be powerless to fight the lockout afterwords and would essentially be forced to negotiate with the owners setting the precedence. I could be wrong here though, but that's how I understand it.
