I thought this was an interesting read at the very least. I don't watch much college football. Thoughts on this?

Here's the theory and explanation (http://www.fantasyfootballmetrics.com/Player_News/Content/QB_College-QB-Vers1.0_2-17-2011.htm)

Here's the Ricky Stanzi part... (http://www.fantasyfootballmetrics.com/Player_News/Content/NFL-Draft_2011_Stanzi_2-23-2011.htm)

lol is the Gabbert balloon starting to lose air already? joking, but seriously, how many of these QBs do you actually believe are even going to get an opportunity to prove they can be elite? 3 or 4 tops is my guess. The majority of these QB prospects will be lucky to make the teams they might get drafted by. JMO

yeah that was a fun read. Kind of re-iterates the QB discussions we've had here. (you know the ones where discussion takes precedent over cheer leading)

There are intangibles that do seem to separate QB's. It's not full proof, but it is interesting. I think these systems are here to reduce the chances of busts, not so much to determine who is franchise.

Stanzi problem is he kind of tanked in the senior bowl, his bowl game against Missouri, and his combine workouts. It will be of interest to see how far he falls or if someone uses these metrics to grab him earlier then anticipated.

Stanzi was my 3rd rank QB behind Luck and Mallet. Since Luck didn't come out Stanzi might be my #1.

Nice find, Mindbender. Interesting, but at the same time...

For simplicity, (crazy example) if every ultimately successful QB in the NFL averaged 3.0+ Passing TDs per game in college, and we set a bench mark for 100.0% grade in that category at 3.0 TDs -- then if a particular QB averaged 4.0 TDs, he would score a 1.250 in our system for that category.
I have a bit of a hard time trusting his math after this part. Last I checked, 4.0 divided by 3.0 would be 1.333, not 1.250. Unless I'm missing something in this quick skim of the article.

I'm also a little wary of him labeling Mark Sanchez as "good/great."

If the Wonderlic info is all he needs, it would be pretty easy to just plot the prospect's score vs. possibly Wonderlic score. Basically, show what that player's "rating" would be in his system if he scored X on his Wonderlic. Then he could see what score the player needs on the Wonderlic to cross that threshold value of 0.850.

Seen it before and it's amazing every time. Stanzi's ball placement on a lot of those throws was really impressive.

I'd much rather have this guy later in the draft than waste our first rounder on newton or gabbert. His accuracy looks awesome but im not sure on the arm strength. Not one of those balls had a ton of zip on it. One thing is for sure...he isn't a check down, dump off guy like gabbert.

At 3:30 of the video....those are throws I look for in a qb. Those are throws I see Brady, Rodgers ,Brees , Manning make. They throw in between defenders or in tight windows.
Something I hardly ever see in Newton. He usually makes throws over defenders which is no biggie. JP made those throws easily.

Brees/Manning/Brady all have pretty good arm strenght. Nothing to write home about. That looks like what Stanzi has. If that leads to him having better than average anticipation to where he would rather put it to a spot with an arc than wait till he is completely open and then rifle it in there, thats fine with me.

If they were going to pick a QB in say the third, and you had Kaepernick/Stanzi/Dalton to choose from, it would be nice to have a tried and true formula that could give you a tie breaker with whom to choose.

Manning has 'pretty good arm strength'? I'd say he has a cannon, and it is something to write home about.

i'd be ok with those three, in that order.

Love Stanzi. Watched him against AZ the last two years and was impressed, even though he was far from perfect.

He has all the measurables IMO. I'm not sure he goes 3rd, though. Given our needs, I think we could wait until the 4th. As much as I like him, I still think there's a pretty decent miss rate with him.

He embraces the term "Backup ".

I watch the Big 10 and he's a solid, steady college QB with limited skills.

I guess that would be a "skinny post"?

Here are the ones I like to see - shows Stanzi under pressure. Does anyone feel the same way, that these kind of plays are useful to project someone's NFL ability ?

I think the best thing he showed this year was that he could cut down on his mistakes. If you look at his TD/INT ratio compaired to earlier years it has really improved. I'm pretty sure there was a video on ESPN.com about his film study and how he thought that helped him cut down on his mistakes.

I am having a really hard time seeing why people aren't higher on Stanzi.

1. Those two videos, while I know that they are highlight reels, show him making throws that I haven't seen from any of the other top QB's "highlight" reels.

2. He plays under a great college coach, one that is from the Belichick tree and has often been mentioned as a NFL candidate.

3. He is a long time top program starter, he is a winner, and he has shown improvement every year.

4. The things that he excels at are the things that you love to be innate in a QB; leadership, POCKET AWARENESS (this is an extremely underrated trait in college QB's), he has the size and the arm. He may need some work on decision making but that has proven to be something that he is willing to work on and has already improved year to year. 3 Top 10 games this past season, and 7 TD's to 0 INT's are you kidding me?

5. I think this guy in the 3rd or the first of our 4th picks would be something that would have me excited.

I agree. But there is one last thing we need to know...

What does his hair look like?

This could be the make or break factor...

I thought so to.. reading some analysis says he does have some technical short comings that affects his accuracy some.... So the highlight reel doesn't show his short comings like all highlight reels.

However I think he could be a very groomable prospect behind Fitz.

I don't think Fitz nor Thigpen looked that good in college.

I know little about Fitz's college days

but Fitz has the head for the game and would be a good mentor while a player like Stanzi comes around

Still tough to tell...

Do you think it could be pulled back into a little queer ponytail?

Every time i've seen him play i thought "that kid has what it takes"... then he'll vanish for 4 weeks...

He's the only kid who didn't raise serious red flags whenever i saw him. Personally i wouldn't be mad with us grabbing him in round 3. I'll dig up some more stuff on him and form an opinion... but i remember last year thinking that he looked elite.

his numbers didn't really scale up this year (i think he was injured for part of the season?), he did improve... and while he isn't the strongest armed guy out there... i always liked his pocket presence, vision and accuracy.
