NHL draft will be a sleeper hit, TSN says

On the first day of summer, hundreds of thousands of Canadians will be doing what they normally do at this time of the year: watching the NHL entry draft on television.

"That's Canada for you," says TSN's Doug Walton, who will produce the channel's three-hour coverage of the draft's first round starting at 1 p.m. today. "I think everybody's been a little surprised at how well the draft has done in the ratings."

Last year, for example, a per-minute average of 289,000 Canadians watched what amounted to middle-aged guys talking on cellphones and pimply-faced teenagers trying on hockey sweaters over their new suits.

I wish they'd give the draft more coverage. But I guess 3 hours is better than nothing.
