Bills Team Needs Heading into Draft

    Hey Bills fans,

I'm representing the Bills in a mock draft on a Cleveland Browns message board and I want to make sure I have the needs right. This is what I was thinking in order of priority for you guys:

    1) 3-4 DE
    2) 3-4 OLB/pass rusher
    3) QB
    4) ILB
    5) TE
    6) RT
    7) Secondary Depth

As far as draft strategy goes, I was thinking this:

1st round: Draft Dareus if available and trade down to 6-12 if he's not, drafting JJ Watt and picking up another 2nd-rounder
2nd round: Drafting the best available 3-4 OLB if the value is there. I'm hoping for Brooks Reed. If I traded down, I'd hope to take Martez Wilson with the second 2nd if he's available, and if not, then target the next best QB available, with the order Ponder, Mallett, Kaepernick, Locker.
3rd round: Take a QB if I didn't take one in the second. If I did take a QB in the 2nd, I'd be looking at the LBs if a good one was available. This should also be a good value spot for RTs (Cannon and Carpenter)and TEs (all of them), but that's where I want to get your feedback on priorities.
4th round: Here I'm looking at McCarthy or Matthews at ILB if I didn't get Wilson in the 2nd. If all those spots are filled then I'm moving on to RT (maybe James Brewer), but realistically, our draft won't go this long before the actual one starts.

So, what do you guys think? Any suggestions? Any players the Bills seem to have their eyes on? Anyone you guys see as worth trading up to get?

QB in the 2nd if we trade down for Watt, otherwise very solid.

Unless somebody unexpectedly drops into the second, I'd lower QB below ILB and OT. That being said, I believe if Ponder is available at 34 they'll take him.

Tackle is a lot higher than a 6th priority, but then, that's how the Bills have always seen it. That's why we get guys in the lower rounds and are looking for street free agents by week 5.

Really any position besides RB and WR are huge needs IMO....

Here is what I think will happen going only into the first 2 rounds because the rest is even more of a toss up than those 2. Because there is no free agency this year before the draft, it will completely change the complexity and unwritten rules about the game of how a pick is selected and why. Because of that here is how my first 2 rounds shape up.

              1. There is no way Dareus gets by Denver. In fact, I'm one of the few who think Carolina will surprise everyone and take him #1 overall. That will leave Denver with out their guy. Cincy is sure to want Newton, and at that point might decide to jump ahead of Buffalo to get him. That would mean Denver picking after us unless we trade out too. There is probably a team in the top 10 who really likes Patrick Peterson, and will feel once Denver has traded back, that he may be the guy they want. So Buffalo gets a deal, moves back, gets a 2nd number 2. That team takes Peterson, Denver then ends up with either Fairly, Bowers, or Miller. So, in that scenario, if Cam Jordan is still on the board, that will be Buffalo's pick. If Jordan isn't there, they go with Watt.

              2. This is where it gets tricky. It's still unclear which TE they like more between Rudolph, and Stocker, but I think it's pretty safe to say that they end up taking one of these guys at #34 if they have a 2nd choice in the 2nd, and the episode described in round one unfolds. That second pick is almost certainly going to be a QB. That QB will be one of 3, either Ponder, Locker, or Kaepernick.

              3. From that point on it's a crap shoot at best. There are far too many variables before these picks to make predicting them pretty much impossible at this point. JMO.

Just ask the fans of the Buffalo Bills. Trading out of the 3rd overall pick in the draft has never been so easy.

It should be much easier than years past because there will be a rookie cap in place before any draft pick is signed.

Thanks John, I was wondering if more than one guy was needed at any of those positions. The Browns are in a similar position that they need 2 DEs (4-3 DEs, however.)
