Lynch learns from true field general

Jon Gruden has a new nickname for John Lynch. ''Every time he walks by me now, he says, `How ya doin', General Franks,' '' said Lynch, the All-Pro safety for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who has become a close friend of US Army Gen. Tommy Franks, leader of the American troops in the war in Iraq.

Franks, commander of US Central Command, which has headquarters in Tampa, first met Lynch at a fund-raiser around the time of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

''I think he's a great man,'' said Lynch. ''I've had a chance to speak to him often over the past couple of years. He was busy with the war for the last six months, but as an American I appreciate his efforts and the sacrifices he made taking care of our country. I know he was away from Mrs. Franks for six months before he returned home from Iraq. He made the same sacrifices many of the soldiers made.''
