Both the Jets and Patriots took Quarterbacks in the draft to groom and they already have solid starters. The Bills have Ryan Fitzpatrick and Levi Brown on the roster. That's it. And Brown was cut last year once. Why the hell wouldn't the Bills have taken a single QB in the draft? Even a project. McElroy would have been a good project and the Jets took him.

Now before you all rip me for being negative. I love our draft for the most part and am happy they filled big holes on the defense. But I don't understand why Nix/Gailey wouldn't take a single QB. Fitzpatrick's contract is up after the season. And again, all we have is Levi freaking Brown! WTF!

The only thing I can think of is that the team is targeting a couple guys in free agency. But I don't know.

I think they liked Newton and Ponder this year, and when getting either one of them was pretty much impossible they said screw it, we'll wait until next season.

I think it is quite obvious that the Bills would have taken a quarterback if there was one that they liked. The had three quarterbacks in for a visit, all three were taken before they could draft them. I am not sure why some of you get so upset because they don't do what you want them to do. They are not going to take a quarterback that they don't want, move on. McElroy won't be groomed to be the Jets franchise, they took a shot at hoping he will be a serviceable backup, nothing more.

Nix actually said last year that he's not a McNabb fan. Fitz is the guy next season.

I could see that. I honestly think they were shocked that Ponder was grabbed that high and they targeted him for a trade back into the 1st round or right at their 2nd round pick.

If they took a QB then we'd go through the process of figuring out if they were worth holding on to and once a team invests in a QB the time starts ticking for the coaching staff and the GM. They are doing as the Jets did. Building the team up in the trenches and touching up on other positions and then once we have done enough to shore up certain spots we will look for a QB of the future. Fitz is a fantastic stop gap who could potentially take a team to the playoffs if given the tools. You cannot criticize the team for not picking another 3rd string QB when we can pick one up in FA that is probably better.

The Jets and Pats don't have the million holes to fill that we do. So they can afford the luxury of taking a gamble on a later round QB. We can't, we need all of the players we can get, so wasting a pick on a developmental QB that has very little chance of panning out is not a smart move.

BillsFanCupp38
04-30-2011, 04:41 PM
Isn't Levi Brown that developmental project? However we do need a legit backup so I wouldn't be surprised if they brought Brian Brohm back or brought in another veteran. Next year we can really get serious about a QB and take one in the first round assuming there is one worthy. Lets continue to build a great Defense and an offensive line and then it won't matter what QB we throw in there.

I think McElroy was drafted to be a backup. Sanchez is still very young. NE has drafted 6 QB's since they drafted Brady.

Michael, are you waiting for a QB just so you can beat off to his rookie card? This team is full of holes on defense. They barely have back-ups. The upside of drafting defense beats drafting a QB to groom to be "great" in three years. Improving the defense won't take as much time and will make the Bills much better - they gave up 425 points last year. That's unacceptable in the CFL. You got to stop riding the "draft a QB now" train.

NE has 13 draft picks...they can take a flier on a QB any time they want and not skip a beat - the Bills don't have that luxury. Spiller was a luxury pick last year but at least they didn't jump on McCoy and Claussen.

I think they liked Newton and Ponder this year, and when getting either one of them was pretty much impossible they said screw it, we'll wait until next season.

Right.

Panicking, and picking a QB you aren't completely sold on, just because you think you need one, gets you JP Losman.

They didn't have a shot at a "Franchise" guy. So they were better off using their picks to add starters to our defense. Nix has said several times that we will add one QB, either through the draft or Free Agency. I guess it'll be through Free Agency.

Well the panthers have newton, clausen, pike, Moore, and st. Pierre. I'd sign Moore or st.Pierre for a back up. Maybe thigpen from the dolphins, or volek of the chargers. What I don't want is mcnabb or young who will want to start over Fitz. We need to keep progressing on last seasons late turn around.

The only thing I can think of is that the team is targeting a couple guys in free agency. But I don't know.

I like not taking a QB. I think we should focus on defense because ours is atrocious and build that up while upgrading our offensive line before picking a young QB to hand the keys to the ride to.

Taking a project QB at this point would be just a waste of time and a pick. We already have a late round project QB.

Wait it out, fix the defense and then go after a franchise guy next year. If we're a bit more competitive next year we can always trade up to get "our guy". But that defense needed ALOT of help.

I think they liked Newton and Ponder this year, and when getting either one of them was pretty much impossible they said screw it, we'll wait until next season.

How is it impossible with a #3 pick? Only one was gone at that point. We are ALWAYS waiting until next season. See the other teams took QB's because they don't want to wait. And we always want to wait to get one in a later round and all that's left is what we got. If we haven't won in a decade we must be doing something wrong.

Your thinking is wrong, that's how players like Alex Smith and David Carr get picked #1 overall. You don't reach for a QB just beacuse you need one, at #3 there were no QB's the Bills brass thought could be a franchise signal caller, so they picked one of the best two players in the draft (Dareus). The Bill's used your logic when they drafted JP, and that failed miserably. This was a weak QB class as a whole, and after Bradford so was last years. Next year has the potential to have some strong QB's last past the #1 pick. Luck, Foles,Cousins, Jones, Barkley and I'm sure they're a few more that have early round talent.

Doug, no QB taken at #3 was going to help this team score 426 points next year or even the following year. They need to upgrade the defense and get it down to a manageable 320 points against. That's still 20 a game...then they can get serious.

Ponder and Locker were both reaches and neither worthy of the 3rd over all pick. Even with Newton or Gabbert they would have struggled badly with the oline Buffalo has. Buffalo needs starters NOW not 1-2 years if any QB selected had sat behind Fitz. There just wasnt a QB in this class that was a must have.

This sets up well for next year (yeah I get it next year) Buffalo will be in position to go Offense and get a QB and strengthen the Oline.

If Dareus doesn't pan out that means at least 30 NFL teams were wrong. I'll take that company. If any other team was there at 3 and Dareus was there they would have taken him. Denver obvious wanted Miller more and Carolina went flash with Newton.

OK, I wouldn't have balked in the third either...but Mallet is going to sit behind Brady for a long time...we may never know if he will pan out...that was a pure luxury pick for a team with 13 choices. He might not have gone until the 4th or later.

Any QB taken would have helped a lot from what we have. There were MANY QB's to pick from, none of those were good enough to help us? Other teams sure thought they were. And most of these other teams have been doing much better than our team. We have not made good picks in years, I just think it's time try something different. We can not do much worse than we have been. The D was allowing a lot of points because they were always on the feild. If the O had not gone 3 and out all the time things would be much different. I guess I am just getting a little sick of waiting until next year or maybe the next x 10 or 11.

I think it depends on the status of the salary cap.

The Panthers blew a lot of money on Clossman. If it had been 3 years ago, there would have been a big cap hit for cutting him. Big enough to tie up their cap space, and prevent them from spending big money on another QB.

I was hoping the Bills would draft a QB in the second or third round, not being especially interested in Newton or Gabbert. I think if Ponder had been there, at #34, they might have pulled the trigger. When they did not draft Dalton or Kaepernick (who went at 35 and 36 I believe) I assume it was because they weren't sufficiently convinced they have fhanchise QB potential. They obviously liek Fitz, and were not going to draft a QB high unless it represented a clear upgrade. I thought they might take a flyer on a QB late, but I guess they did not want to draft someone who was not a clear upgrade to Levi Brown as a developmental guy. I believe they will try to sign a veteran who can give them a reliable backup, and sign a UDFA for an extra arm in camp. I suppose there's almost as much of a chance a UDFA QB can turn out to be a future hall of famer as a late round flyer, which is slim to none.

Claussen was the 48th pick. He received $2.53M guaranteed on a 4 year/$6.3M deal. That's backup money, the cap isn't an issue.

By contrast, Sam Bradford was the #1 overall pick and received over $50M guaranteed on a 6 year/$78M deal. Different animal, and why they say a contract like that will set the team back years if the QB can't play.

TBH, I think the Bills particularly liked Newton and Ponder - as someone else has said. I think there may have been the odd other one, like Kaepernick, that they might have been interested in, but at the right value.
I'm fairly impressed that they didn't seem to get remotely drawn into the QB stakes this year, and stuck to taking the guys they wanted, for the value they were prepared to 'pay'.
While Newton was long gone, with the #3 overall, the Bills selected Dareus, who was the absolute best pick to help the franchise, right now.
After that, the Bills kept picking 'sensibly', while all over the place, teams were 'reaching' for QBs, be it Locker, Ponder, Dalton, Kaepernick. Gabbert @ #10 wasn't a bad spot for him to go tbh, and Mallett in the 3rd round was also decent value.

We do already have the development kid in Brown, we need to find either a franchise QB, which wasn't there this time around, or a capable backup. Capable backups are what FA is for, and there's a list of plenty who could become available.
Gradkowski being one to look out for imho - he seems to do a decent job whenever asked, yet keeps being bumped down the pecking order for the Raiders, whenever they try yet another QB out.

No when you get a veteran it is because the team that has them feels they are used up, and they usually are. How many times have we went after a player with a big name, that comes and plays thier last crappy year and retires. This year the draft had several QB's that wuld have made a difference in Buffalo and because they didn't take them everyone says they were no good. If we had taken one everyone would be be saying " Oh what a great pick". You have to be realistic we need a QB and a future leader and we keep saying next year. Well they only way you even get a chance at that is to have another crappy year. After 10+ crappy years we need to do something different.

This draft made all of our current and future qb's better by default.

There is a huge difference in offensive play's called when you are behind to when you are ahead or tie. This should improve our offense which had another year to learn the playbook. This system is not a qb heavy system which has made this topic more frustrating as we don't need a stud there. We are a run first team and a high percentage third down passing team. Fitz has turned that corner...there is not qb contoversy finally..he is the man...the team is behind him...the coaches are behind him.

We need a decent back up.

We have a journeymen in Brown.

A fourth "Body" will be brought in or snatched from a practice squad or some ****** tech school in las Vegas nobodies heard of who lights it up in preseason....don't forget canadian league....or areana football or some ****. . point is fitz is the man.

The sets-them-back-5-years concept is overstated.

It is much easier to sit a 2nd rnd pick for the 1st pick in the draft than it will be to give up on the 1st pick in the draft.

If Clausen becomes a good reliable back up, it won't be a wasted 2nd rnd pick but unless Newton becomes an elite franchise QB, the Panthers will have wasted the 1st pick in the draft. For that reason, they will give him every chance & years to succeed.

I don't think it is an overstated concept to say unless Newton becomes a franchise QB that the Panthers will be set back 4 or 5 years.

As a Bucs fan that makes me happy because I doubt Newton becomes a franchise QB myself.
